In this paper, the preliminary breakdown pulse (PBP) trains preceding the negative first return strokes recorded using a broad band antenna system in Johor Bahru, Malaysia and Florida, United States were analyzed. In lightning flashes observed in Malaysia, the ratio between the amplitude of the largest preliminary breakdown pulse (PBP) and the peak return stroke electric field (RS) was 27.8% and the corresponding value in Florida was 29.4%. The time interval between the beginning of the preliminary breakdown sequence and the initiation of the return stroke was 57.6 ms in Malaysia and 22 ms in Florida. The results of the study support the hypothesis that the PBP/RS ratio increases with increasing latitude.

Received Mar 3, 2018 Revised Apr 11, 2018 Accepted Apr 21, 2018 Paintball has gained a huge popularity in Malaysia with growing number of tournaments organized nationwide. Currently, Ideal Pro Event, one of the paintball organizer found difficulties to pair a suitable opponent to against one another in a tournament. This is largely due to the manual matchmaking method that only randomly matches one team with another. Consequently, it is crucial to ensure a balanced tournament bracket where eventual winners and losers not facing one another in the very first round. This study proposes an intelligent matchmaking using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and tournament management system for paintball organizers. PSO is a swarm intelligence algorithm that optimizes problems by gradually improving its current solutions, therefore countenancing the tournament bracket to be continually improved until the best is produced. Indirectly, through the development of the system, it is consider as an intelligence business idea since it able to save time and enhance the company productivity. This algorithm has been tested using 3 size of population; 100, 1000 and 10,000. As a result, the speed of convergence is consistent and has not been affected through big population.N. N. S. A single hop network called piconet is the basic communication topology of bluetooth which allows only eight active devices for communication among them seven are active slaves controlled by one master. Multiple piconets are interconnected through a common node, known as Relay, to form a massive network called as Scatternet. It is obvious that the performance of Scatternet scheduling is highly dependent and directly proportionate with the performance of the Relay node. In contrary, by reducing the number of Relays, it may lead to poor performance, since every Relay has to perform and support several piconet connections. The primary focus of this study is to observe the performance metrics that affects the inter-piconet scheduling since the Relay node’s role is like switch between multiple piconets. In this paper, we address and analyze the performance issues to be taken into consideration for efficient data flow in Scatternet based on Relay node.

A review on basic principle of lightning location in multi-station system and the ability of single-station measurement

R. Ismail; Zikri Abadi Baharudin

This paper study the principle of lightning location systems of how the multi-station techniques can be used to locate the sources of VHF radio emissions from lightning phenomenon. The lightning sensor used to measure electromagnetic field comprise of the magnetic direction finding (MDF) systems, time of arrival (TOA) systems and interferometry systems. These detection systems can point the place of the lightning strike or as other word the detailed geometry of latitude and longitude of lightning channel can be obtain. The single-station presented in this paper clarifies the slow field changes generated by preliminary breakdown pulse (PBP) and verifies the ability in determining the starting time of the slow field changes (pre-starting time) and further allow one to differentiate between intra-cloud (ICs) activities and the preceding processes of ground flashes.

Assessment on the impact of distributed generation to the distribution network overcurrent protection in Malaysia

Adlan Ali; Fazliana Ahmad Buderi; Mohd Ariff Mat Hanafiah; Zikri Abadi Baharudin

Distributed Generation (DG) is the generation of electricity from multiple renewable energy sources and is located closer to the user, or load. These days DGs is developing rapidly because of the advantages it could bring into the system such as enhancing the transmission efficiency, securing distribution reliability as well as reduction of climate change. However, the penetration of DGs to the existing national grid system may potentially contributes to several impacts, with the power system protection being one of the major issues. In this assessment, Power System Computer Aided Design (PSCAD) software is used to simulate different scenarios related to the distribution network without the presence of DG and with the presence of DG. The results of this simulation is studied in order to identify the changes of overcurrent protection relay performance that could leads to several negative impacts which could jeopardize the effectiveness of electrical supply security, the safety of consumers and the lifetime of electrical assets and equipment.

The Investigation of Coupling-Unwanted Signal to the Solar Panel Material due to Induced Overvoltage Created by Short Spark Gap

Nur Hidayu Abdul Rahim; Zikri Abadi Baharudin; Nazri Othman

Photovoltaics (PV) system converts light into electric current using the photo-electric effect. Due to the growing demand for renewable energy sources, the manufacturing of solar cells and PV system arrays has advanced considerably in recent years. However, lightning protection on photovoltaic material is very crucial to avoid strike damage caused by transient overvoltage to the photovoltaic system that may due to a direct or an indirect strike. There is no experimental study recently to show the profile of unwanted signals due to induced overvoltage that is coupled to the solar panel system or related material. It is consequently imperative that experimental work to investigate the unwanted signal that is coupled to the solar panel material be conducted. In this study, the experimental set up of induced overvoltage was conducted in which the unwanted signal due to induced voltage was created by the short spark gap. The experiment was conducted in a High Voltage lab in University Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) using artificial lightning discharge of 1.2/50μs with the peak voltage of 33 kV. The distance between the solar panel and spark gap was varied in order to study the relationship between the maximum voltage of unwanted signal and the distance. The existence of unwanted signal due to induced voltage with of maximum voltage profile was observed and is discussed in detail in the result and discussion sections.
