Assessing endogeneity issues in international marketing research

Ruey-Jer “Bryan” Jean; Ziliang Deng; Daekwan Kim; Xiaohui Yuan

Purpose – Endogeneity is a potential threat to the validity of international marketing (IM) research. The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention of IM researchers to issues of endogeneity, to provide a comprehensive overview of the sources of endogeneity, and to discuss the statistical solutions. Design/methodology/approach – The authors conduct the research in two steps. In the first step, the authors review the nature and sources of endogeneity specifically in IM research. In the second step, the authors review 60 IM papers on endogeneity published in the period 1995-2014 and assess the current practice of addressing endogeneity in the IM literature. Findings – Sample selection bias and simultaneity are prevalent sources of endogeneity in IM research. Internationalization-performance relationship and innovation-export nexus are the two most frequently adopted models subject to potential endogeneity. Simply lagging the main independent variable is statistically flawed in dealing with endogeneity ...

Scheduling Optimization in the Mass Customization of Global Producer Services

Jianming Yao; Ziliang Deng

Scheduling in the mass customization (MC) of global producer services is a typical multiobjective dynamic optimization issue, which is constrained by stochastic demand and resources. Such scheduling frequently challenges the cross-border decision-making processes of multinational enterprises (MNEs). The academic literature has yet to examine this optimization, although studies on the MC of tangible product provision are numerous. To address this challenge effectively, we construct a novel stochastic multiobjective dynamic scheduling model by considering the key features of the MC of global producer services, namely, stochastic demand, distinctive characteristics of customization orders, special stage classification, economies of scale, stochastic service capabilities, and pressures for global integration versus local responsiveness. We improve the ant algorithm to solve the scheduling problem and illustrate the feasibility, validity, and applicability of the new model and algorithm using the case of an MNE that provides seismic acquisition services for oil companies. The results suggest that the proposed algorithm can achieve the flexibility and balance of multiobjective optimization. The major optimization indicators suggest that the scheduling improved the overall economies of scale on the supply chain, which is a key factor in ensuring the success of the MC of global producer services. By incorporating the methodology of operational research and the perspective of international business, this study contributes to the literature of operational research by developing a novel scheduling model for the MC of global producer services.

Dynamic resource integration optimisation of global distributed manufacturing: an embeddedness–interaction perspective

Jianming Yao; Ziliang Deng

In the era of fragmented global value chain enabled by digital networks, distributed manufacturing with effective global resource integration and optimisation has become important for multinational enterprises (MNEs) to organise. However, conventional theories and methods disregard the dynamic nature of integration optimisation triggered by knowledge accumulation and spillover during resource embeddedness in the local market and interaction amongst resources. This study establishes a novel embeddedness–interaction perspective, which refers to focusing on intra-network knowledge transfer and inter-network knowledge spillover frequently observed in the resource integration of global distributed manufacturing in MNEs. This study elaborates the mechanism of resource integration optimisation of distributed manufacturing with the presence of an embeddedness–interaction nexus. On this basis, a novel, dynamic resource integration optimisation model and a corresponding algorithm for global distributed manufacturing are constructed. In particular, we designate the minimisation of the weighted Euclidean distance between scores and expected value as the most essential objective of resource integration optimisation modelling and algorithm to highlight the effect of the embeddedness–interaction nexus on dynamic resource integration optimisation. We illustrate the value of the embeddedness–interaction perspective and verify the feasibility and validity of the model and algorithm by applying this optimisation method to a two-country, two-stage, six-resource case.
