The One Jet Inclusive Cross Section at Order αs3 : Gluons Only

Stephen D. Ellis; Zoltan Kunszt; Davison E. Soper

One of the dramatic features of the recent data [1] from hadron colliders, both at CERN and Fermilab, is the obvious appearance of hadron jets as a characteristic feature of a sizeable fraction of the final states. These jets are an essential tool for organizing and analyzing the data and are potentially important as a test of our quantitative understanding of the underlying strong interaction theory, QCD. This is particularly true if one wants to look for a breakdown of the standard model due, for example, to the possible composite structure of the particles now thought to be elementary. One would like to perform this search at the largest pT scale possible. One therefore wants to look at parton-parton scattering, which has a large cross section because it proceeds via the strong interaction. The signal for hard partonparton scattering is jet production, and the most straightforward jet cross section is that for the inclusive production of a jet.

One-jet inclusive cross section at order α s 3 : Quarks and gluons

Stephen D. Ellis; Zoltan Kunszt; Davison E. Soper

The next-to-leading order inclusive jet cross section is calculated including both quarks and gluons. The general structure of the dependence of the cross section on the explicit jet definition and on the choice of the renormalization scale {mu}{sup 2} is found to be very similar to the case of gluons only, calculated earlier. The resulting cross section is shown to involve a much reduced theoretical uncertainty compared to the lowest-order result. First comparisons with experimental data are also exhibited.

Jets at hadron colliders at order [alpha][sub [ital s]][sup 3]: A look inside

Stephen D. Ellis; Zoltan Kunszt; Davison E. Soper

Results from the study of hadronic jets in hadron-hadron collisions at order [alpha][sub [ital s]][sup 3] in perturbation theory are presented. The focus is on various features of the internal structure of jets. The numerical results of the calculation are compared with data where possible and exhibit reasonable agreement.

Jets in hadron colliders at order. alpha. sub s sup 3

Stephen D. Ellis; Zoltan Kunszt; Davison E. Soper

Recent results from the study of hadronic jets in hadron-hadron collisions at order a{sub s}{sup 3} in perturbation theory are presented. The numerical results are in good agreement with data and this agreement is illustrated where possible.
