In this paper we consider the performance evaluation of ship-berth link in port. The efficiency of operations and processes on the ship-berth link has been analysed through the basic operating parameters such as berth utilization, average number of ships in waiting line, average time that a ship spends in waiting line, average service time of a ship, average total time that a ship spends in port, average quay crane (QC) productivity and average number of QCs per ship. All the main performances of the ship-berth link are given. This is one of the problems faced by planners and terminal operators in ports. In this paper, we propose two models based on simulation and queuing theory, respectively, in order to determine the performance evaluation of ship-berth link in port. Numerical results and computational experiments are reported to evaluate the efficiency of the models for Pusan East Container Terminal (PECT).

This paper deals with the storage of unit loads and break‐bulk cargo within transport systems or, more precisely, within public and port storage locations as queueing systems with bulk arrivals and a single service. The bulk arrivals are represented by groups of unit loads as homogeneous units, these being pallets, containers, boxes, cases, bales, bags, slabs, ingots, etc. The service is performed by the storage facilities with forklifts, tractors, cranes, lifts, etc. An analytical methodology for the design of storage operations is developed using the determination of the mean service position of a unit load within the arrival group in the queue for the storage service.

ABSTRACT Research is a key factor for a successful reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transport. This article summarizes the main results of REACT, a project cofinanced by the European Commission, which aimed to develop a European Strategic Research Agenda for low GHG transport. A literature review and a multistage expert consultation process were used to map technological and nontechnological research areas and evaluate them according to different criteria (i.e., GHG emissions reduction, cost-efficiency, feasibility, time frame of research stages). We consulted the research agendas of the European Technologies Platforms on transport and current EU research programs. Expert opinions were collected through web forms, interviews, and participation in structured workshops. The REACT Research Agenda identified the following research priorities for a more climate-friendly transport system by 2030: (a) in the short term, cost-effective solutions consist of (1) more efficient, lighter vehicles with advanced internal combustion engines, (2) reducing road transport demand and (3) fostering GHG emission legislation; (b) in the medium/long term, the focus shifts toward (1) electric vehicles and hydrogen, (2) Intelligent Transport Systems, and (3) spatial planning and economic and social measures to reduce transport demand. In addition, one of the main findings identified strong links between technology research and planning, social sciences, and economy.
