Optical imaging with photonic hyper-crystals: Veselago lens and beyond

Zun Huang; Evgenii E. Narimanov

We present an optical imaging system based on the recently introduced concept of photonic hyper-crystal, an artificial optical medium combining the properties of hyperbolic materials and photonic crystals. The proposed device functions as a Veselago lens with a nearly constant negative refractive index and substantially reduced image aberrations. The planar nature of this lens offers significant applications in nano-photolithography and hot-spots diagnosis in silicon-based semiconductor devices.

Veselago lens by photonic hyper-crystals

Zun Huang; Evgenii E. Narimanov

Based on the recent concept of the photonic hyper-crystal—an artificial optical medium that combines the properties of hyperbolic materials and photonic crystals, we present the imaging system functioning as a Veselago lens. This planar lens shows a nearly constant negative refractive index with substantially reduced image aberrations, and can find potential applications in photolithography and hot-spots detection of silicon-based integrated circuits.

Optical phase retrieval using conical refraction in structured media

Zun Huang; Evgenii E. Narimanov

We propose a method of optical phase retrieval based on the conical refraction imaging in structured media. We show that a multilayered dielectric photonic crystal functioning as a conically refractive flat lens can be used to reconstruct phase information of complex optical signals. Our method enables a single simultaneous measurement of multiple images on the same image plane and allows a rapid stable recovery of the optical phase. The planar geometry of the proposed device is compatible with current nano-fabrication techniques and, therefore, can find broad applications in optical signal processing and imaging.

Zeroth-order transmission resonance in hyperbolic metamaterials

Zun Huang; Evgenii E. Narimanov

We describe a novel resonance in planar hyperbolic metamaterials. In conventional Fabry-Perot mode numbering, the resonance corresponds to 0-th order, and can be observed in planar hyperbolic media with arbitrary small thickness.

A Novel Transmission Resonance in Farby-Perot Resonator with Hyperbolic Metamaterials

Zun Huang; Evgenii E. Narimanov

We describe a novel zero-th order transmission resonance in a Fabry-Perot resonator with planar hyperbolic metamaterials. This resonance combines sub-wavelength light confinement with strong radiative coupling.
