Evaluation of karstic aquifers contribution to streams by the statistical analysis of recession curves

A. Cem Koc

Karstic aquifers significantly contribute to streams in most of Turkey’s river basins, so studies on karst water resources have great importance for Turkey. Karstic aquifer contributions are generally emerging at several locations near the river bed and are not readily measured by direct hydrometric methods. In this study, the extent of karstic aquifer contributions to a stream will be investigated by the statistical analysis of recession coefficients of recession curves. Six stream gauging stations on different streams in the western Mediterranean region of Turkey are selected. Recession periods of the streams are simulated by exponential and quadratic recession curve models. Recession coefficient series of the stream gauging stations are statistically investigated. The comparison of various statistical parameters shows that the recession coefficient series are fairly related to the karstic aquifer contributions. Especially, the measure of spread parameters, standard deviation and interquartile range of recession coefficient series are related to the extent of the karstic aquifer contributions to streams.

Seismic Response of Underground Lifeline Systems

Selcuk Toprak; Engin Nacaroğlu; A. Cem Koc

This paper presents and discusses the recent developments related to seismic performance and assessment of buried pipelines. The experience from the performance of pipelines during last earthquakes provided invaluable information and lead to new developments in the analysis and technologies. Especially, the pipeline performance during Canterbury earthquake sequence in New Zealand is taken as a case study here. The data collected for the earthquake sequence are unprecedented in size and detail, involving ground motion recordings from scores of seismograph stations, high resolution light detection and ranging (LiDAR) measurements of vertical and lateral movements after each event, and detailed repair records for thousands of km of underground pipelines with coordinates for the location of each repair. One of the important learnings from the recent earthquakes is that some earthquake resistant design and technologies proved to be working. This provides a motivation to increase international exchange and cooperation on earthquake resistant technologies. Another observation is that preventive maintenance is important to reduce the pipeline damage risk from seismic and other hazards. To increase the applicability and sustainability, seismic improvements should be incorporated into the pipe replacement and asset management programs as part of the preventive maintenance concept. However, it is also important to put in the most proper pipeline from the start as replacing or retrofitting the pipelines later requires substantial investment. In this respect, seismic considerations should be taken into account properly in the design phase.

Leonardo Projelerinin Teknik Alanlardaki Eğitime Katkısı

Selcuk Toprak; A. Cem Koc

WASTE-TRAIN be PROWAT projelerinin egitim malzemeleri karma egitime uygun olarak tasarlanmistir. Sonuclar katilimcilarin ozellikle karma egitim yaklasimina ilgili olduklarini gostermektedir.

Cost Effects of Different Calculation Methods on Water Distribution Systems

A. Cem Koc

The network of distribution mains is nearly the most expensive item of equipment in a water undertaking. Also, the cost of its upkeep generally represents a large proportion of the annual maintenance budget. It is therefore the duty of water engineer to devote some considerable care to the design of the most efficient distribution system and this entails accurate prediction of the discharges and pressures in the various pipe components.
