The occurrence of Philocheras fasciatus (Risso, 1816) (Decapoda, Caridea) in the Turkish Straits system

A. Suat Ateş

[Philocheras fasciatus (Risso, 1816) is reported for the first time from the Turkish Straits system as a result of recent benthic sampling surveys carried out in the Dardanelles (Kilya inlet). Philocheras fasciatus (Risso, 1816) est reporte pour la premiere fois dans le detroit de Turquie, au cours des recents echantillonnages benthiques effectues dans les Dardanelles (baie de Kilya)., Philocheras fasciatus (Risso, 1816) is reported for the first time from the Turkish Straits system as a result of recent benthic sampling surveys carried out in the Dardanelles (Kilya inlet). The structure of the benthic amphipod assemblage and its relationship with soft-bottom characteristics (particle size, organic matter, etc.) of the coastal waters at the depths of 0–5 m at the Dardanelles, including the Turkish Straits System, was studied. A SCUBA diver took benthos and sediment samples seasonally using a quadrate system of 30×30 cm as three transects from the 8 different stations between July 2008 and April 2009. A total of 3007 individuals belonging to 50 species was reported. Among these, Corophium acutum Chevreux, 1908 had the highest dominance value (Di%=22.18) and the lowest dominance value belonged to Dexamine thea Boeck, 1861 (Di%=0.03). The highest positive correlation (rs=0.57, p<0.05) was observed between the gravel content (%) and the abundance (ind. m−2). The highest sand rate (99.59%) in the sediment was found at the Eceabat site. The lowest rate was at the Kepez Harbour station with a value of 73.01%. The highest H′ value (1.53) was recorded at the Eceabat site, and the lowest H′ value (H′=0.95) was recorded at the Gallipoli sampling station.

A Study on the Relationships between Some Morphological and Reproductive Traits of the Turkish Crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus Eschscholtz, 1823 (Crustacea: Decapoda)

Selçuk Berber; Harun Yildiz; A. Suat Ateş; Musa Bulut; Mehmet Mendeş

This study was carried out to investigate relationships between some morphological and reproductive traits of the Turkish crayfish, A. leptodactylus, collected from a controlled irrigation lake in the Yenice province (Çanakkale, Turkey), between July 2007 and June 2008. For this objective, two multivariate analysis techniques, namely canonical correlation analysis and multivariate multiple linear regression analysis, were used. The results of the canonical correlation analysis have shown that the morphological traits may be used to predict the changes in the reproductive traits. For instance, canonical correlation analysis results suggested that the egg weight and the number of eggs are related to the total length, carapace length, and carapace width. The results of multivariate multiple linear regression analysis, on the other hand, show a slightly different picture. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that both canonical correlation and multivariate regression results can be taken into consideration together when investigating the relations between two variable sets.

On the occurrence of the Mediterranean endemic majid crab, Inachus parvirostris (Risso, 1816) (Decapoda, Brachyura, Majidae) in Turkish seas

A. Suat Ateş; Tuncer Katağan; Tahýr Özcan

In a recent investigation by Ateş et al. (2004) of the sublittoral zone of the Turkish Aegean Sea coast, the number of species of Brachyura known from Turkish coastal waters was set to 97. The majid genus Inachus is represented by at least seven species [Inachus aguarii De Brito Capello, 1876; I. communissimus Rizza, 1839; I. dorsettensis (Pennant, 1777); I. leptochirus Leach, 1817; I. parvirostris (Risso, 1816); I. phalangium (Fabricius, 1775); and I. thoracicus Roux, 1830] in the northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (Falciai & Minervini, 1996). I. parvirostris is known only from the Mediterranean region (Noël, 1992). Only a few papers have reported this, apparently rare, species from the Mediterranean Sea: Risso (1816, 1827; Nice, France), Manning & Froglia (1982; southern Sardinia), Rinelli et al. (1998; Sicily), and Koukouras et al. (1992; Greek Aegean coast). To date, I. parvirostris was not known from Turkish seas, so we herein present the first record of I. parvirostris from the Turkish continental coast.

Zebra midyesinin (Dreissena polymorpha'nın (Pallas, 1771)) Türkiye'nin bazı su kaynaklarında yaşayan dar kıskaçlı kerevitler üzerinde ilk olarak gözlenmesi

Selçuk Berber; A. Suat Ateş; Seçil Acar

Bireyler Turkiye’deki iki dogal gol (Cildir Golu, Egirdir Golu) ve bes goletten (Altinyazi Baraj Golu, Keban Baraj Golu, Kucukcekmece Golu, Karpuzlu Baraj Golu, Kadikoy Baraj Golu) toplanmistir. Bu calismada, kerevitlerin farkli vucut bolumlerine zebra midyesinin tutunmasi belgelenmistir. Cochran’s Q test sonuclari; kerevitin degisik bolumlerine tutunan midye sayilarinin farklilik gosterdigini ortaya koydu (P=0.000) (P <0.001). Zebra midyelerin tatlisu istakozlarinin uzerinde tutunma bolgeleri arasinda farkliligin tespit edilmesinin konakci acisindan bazi olumsuzluklara neden olabilecegi dusunulmektedir.

The first record of Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819) on Carcinus aestuarii Nardo, 1847 in the Çardak Lagoon, Turkey

Seçil Acar; A. Suat Ateş

Abstract This study deals with the presence of Mytilus galloprovincialis on the Mediterranean green crab, Carcinus aestuarii Nardo, 1847 as an epibiont. Crab samples were collected by means of single-entry fyke nets at 6 different locations selected in the Çardak Lagoon. A total of 22 specimens of M. galloprovincialis (1-9 ind. per crab) on different body parts of 4 crabs were recorded. This is the first report about the occurrence of M. galloprovincialis on C. aestuarii.

New records of anthozoan species (Cnidaria, Octocorallia, Hexacorallia) for the Turkish Straits System

H. Barış Özalp; A. Suat Ateş

This study includes new records of soft corals found in the Turkish Straits System (Dardanelles) between 2013-2014. In the above-mentioned area, 50 stations were searched by scientific divers from the intertidal zone to a depth of over 45 m and the ecological characteristics with substrate differences were also recorded. A total of 47 cnidarians were examined during the surveys. Eleven anthozoan species (Aiptasia mutabilis, Alcyonium acaule, Andresia parthenopea, Calliactis parasitica, Cereus pedunculatus, Condylactis aurantiaca, Epizoanthus couchii, Maasella edwardsi, Pteroeides spinosum, Sarcodictyon roseum, Veretillum cynomorium) belonging to 4 orders are new to the Dardanelles strait, one of which is reported from the Marmara Sea. The current data contributed to the advancement of the knowledge about anthozoan species in the Turkish Seas.
