Abstract The pollution of Izmir Bay was investigated by measuring the trace elements of the surface sediments. The sediment samples were collected from 100 locations in Izmir Bay, five rivers and five sewer outfalls. The collected samples were acid digested and analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), flame atomic emission spectrometry (FAES), graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) for a total of 16 trace elements. Selected samples were also analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) for 39 additional elements. The AAS, XRF and INAA techniques agreed fairly well for most of the elements studied. The concentrations of elements showed significant differences between inner, middle and outer bays with higher concentrations in the inner bay. The distributions of the crustal enrichment factors were also prepared and investigated.

Abstract Since 1965, a total of 193 decapod species has been identified from Turkish seas, bringing the number of species to 220 (75 Natantia, 15 M. Reptantia, 36 Anomura, 94 Brachyura). Pandalina profunda and Richardina fredericii are recorded for the first time from the Eastern Mediterranean, and another 8 species (Acantephyra pelagica, Plesionika gigliolii, Stenopus spinosus, Gourretia denticulata, Bathynectes maravigna, Dorhynchus thomsoni, Latreillia elegans, Macropipus tuberculatus) are recorded for the first time from Turkish seas.

Two specimens (one male and one female) of the mantis shrimp, Erugosquilla massavensis (Kossmann, 1880) were sampled at a depth of 30-35 m on muddy bottoms off Çakılköy (east of Kapıdağ peninsula; GPS coordinates: 40◦28′N 28◦02′E) on the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara. The specimens were collected during an experimental fishery study by bottom-trawl, with a cod-end mesh size of 40 # mm (fig. 1). The male specimen was collected on 02.v.2002 (total length 175 mm, weight 19.83 g), and the female specimen was collected on 05.ix.2002 (total length 191 mm, weight 26.93 g). The specimens examined are in accordance with the original description of E. massavensis and, consequently, no further description is required. E. massavensis is the only Indo-West Pacific component of the eastern Mediterranean stomatopod fauna, where it is known to occur off Egypt (Steuer, 1936; Lewinsohn & Manning, 1980), Palestine (Steuer, 1938), Israel (Lewinsohn & Manning, 1980), Lebanon (Holthuis, 1961; Lewinsohn & Manning, 1980), southern Turkey (Holthuis, 1961; Geldiay & Kocataş, 1969; Kocataş & Katağan, 1995), Cyprus (Ingle, 1963; Lewinsohn & Manning, 1980), Crete (Dounas & Steudel, 1994), and Rhodes Island (Galil & Kevrekidis, 2002). Kocataş & Katağan (1995) reported five stomatopod species along the Turkish coasts [ Nannosquilloides occultus (Giesbrecht, 1910), E. massavensis (Kossmann, 1880) (as Oratosquilla massavensis), Rissoides desmaresti (Risso, 1816), R. pallidus (Giesbrecht, 1910), and Squilla mantis (Linnaeus, 1758)] and presented a distribution map of these. The only stomatopod hitherto known from the Sea of Marmara was S. mantis, which was first recorded by Demir (1954). According to the map given by Kocataş & Katağan (1995), E. massavensis is distributed along the entire Mediterranean coast of Turkey, with a westernmost limit extending as

The untreated domestic sewage of 650,000 people and wastes from industries and ships are discharged into the inner Bay of Izmir daily. Since May 1977 physico-chemical and biological effects of pollution in the bay have been examined at 10 stations. The hydrographic studies included measurements of temperature, transparency, seston, salinity, nitrate, phosphorus and dissolved oxygen. The benthic animals collected belong to 108 species; most of them were polychaetes. Comparison of the stations reveals that species richness increases from very polluted regions towards cleaner waters.

A total of three specimens of the amphipod, Peltocoxa gibbosa (Schiecke, 1977) was sampled from a depth of 31 m off Bodrum (two specimens) and a depth of 8 m off Dikili (one specimen) at the Aegean Sea coast of Turkey. The specimens examined are in accordance with the original description of Peltocoxa gibbosa and, consequently, no further description is required. Drawings of this material are given in fig. 1.
