Purpose – Presents a technique based on the development of an artificial neural network (ANN) model for predicting the electromagnetic inference effects on gas pipelines shared right‐of‐way (ROW) with high voltage transmission lines.Design/methodology/approach – Examines the induced pipeline voltage under different soil resistivity, fault current and separation distance.Findings – The results indicate strong agreement between model prediction and observed values.Originality/value – Demonstrates that the ANN‐based model developed can predict the induced voltage with high accuracy. The accuracy of the predicted induced voltage is very important for designing mitigation systems that will increase overall pipeline integrity and make the pipeline and appurtenances safe for operating personnel.

Hybrid renewable energy systems are becoming attractive for remote areas power generation applications due to advances in renewable energy technologies and increase in the oil price. This paper presents a feasibility study of wind penetration into an existing diesel power plant of an isolated Duqum area in the Sultanate of Oman. Wind data from Al Duqm meteorology station and the actual load data from Duqum have been used in the simulation model. HOMER software has been used to perform the study for the hybrid system with no battery storage. For Wind speed less than 5m/s the existing diesel plant seems to be is the only feasible solution over the range of fuel prices used in the simulation. Moreover, the proposed hybrid system becomes feasible at wind speeds of more than 6 m/s and a diesel cost of 0.368 US

Utilizing solar radiation data of 25 locations in Oman, RETScreen software is used to study the economic prospects of solar energy. A solar PV power plant of 5-MW is considered at each of the 25 locations. The results show that the renewable energy produced each year from the PV power plant varies between 9000 MWh at Marmul to 6200 MWh at Sur while the mean value is 7700 MWh of all the 25 locations. The capacity factor of PV plant varies between 20% and 14% and the cost of electricity varies between 210

The study shows that the PV energy at the best location is competitive with diesel generation without including the externality costs of diesel. Renewable energy support policies that can be implemented in Oman are also discussed.

An experimental reduced-scale rig was built to investigate the capacitive and inductive coupling caused by AC power transmission lines near unburied pipelines. A computer model for the experimental rig was created to investigate the different factors that may affect the coupling effect. The basic input data to the model consists of power line and pipeline geometrical configurations, conductor and pipeline physical characteristics including insulation and coating characteristics, and environmental parameters (such as soil characteristics, power source voltage, and equivalent source impedances). The model illustrates the effects of various parameters (length of parallelism, lateral distance, soil resistivity, current magnitude, and voltage magnitude) upon AC electromagnetic interference between transmission lines and nearby pipelines. The results of the computer model were verified experimentally. Good correlation between the experimental and software based simulated results is obtained, which validates the modeling approach of coupling between power transmission line and unburied pipeline.

This paper presents a case study about the impacts of industrial loads on power quality. A review of harmonics causes, negative impacts, mitigation techniques, quantification indices and limits are presented. Moreover, harmonics measurements at three grid station that supply the three main industrial areas located in the Main Interconnected System (MIS) of Oman are conducted. Measurement results are compared with limits specified by national and international standards.

The Authority for Electricity Regulation in Oman has recently announced the implementation of a 500 kW wind farm pilot project in Masirah Island. Detailed wind resource assessment is then required to identify the most suitable location for this project. This paper presents wind resource assessment using nested ensemble numerical weather prediction (NWP) models approach at 2.8 km resolution and multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) technique. A case study based on the proposed approach is conducted over Masirah Island, Oman. The resource assessment over the island was based on the mean wind speed and wind power distribution over the entire island at different heights. In addition, important criteria such as turbulence intensity and peak hour matching are also considered. The NWP model results were verified against the available 10 m wind data observations from the meteorological station in the northern part of the island. The resource assessment criteria were evaluated using MCDM technique to score the locations over the island based on their suitability for wind energy applications. Two MCDM approaches namely equally weighted and differently weighted criteria were implemented in this paper.

This paper presents a literature review about unbalance in power systems and a case study about unbalance measurements in the Main Interconnected Network (MIS) of Oman. A review of unbalance causes, negative impacts, mitigation techniques, quantification indices and limits are presented. Moreover, voltage and current unbalance measurements at three grid stations that supply the three main industrial areas located in the MIS of Oman are conducted. Measurement results are compared with limits specified by national and international standards.
