In this paper, a new load frequency control (LFC) for multi-area power systems is developed based on the direct-indirect adaptive fuzzy control technique. LFCs for each area are designed based on availability of frequency deviation of each area and tie-line power deviation between areas. The fuzzy logic system approximation capabilities are exploited to develop suitable adaptive control law and parameter update algorithms for unknown interconnected LFC areas. An H∞ tracking performance criterion is introduced to minimize the approximation errors and the external disturbance effects. The proposed controller guarantees stability of the overall closed-loop system. Simulation results for a real three-area power system prove the effectiveness of the proposed LFC and show its superiority over a classical PID controller and a type-2 fuzzy controller.

Solar and wind energy data available for Oman indicate that these two resources are likely to play an important role in the future energy generation in this country. In this paper, a model is designed to assess wind and solar power cost per kWh of energy produced using different sizes of wind machines and photovoltaic (PV) panels at two sites in Oman, which then can be generalised for other locations in Oman. Hourly values of wind speed and solar radiation recorded for several years are used for these locations. The wind profiles from Thumrait and Masirah island are modelled using the Weibull distribution. The cost of wind-based energy is calculated for both locations using different sizes of turbines. Furthermore, this paper presents a study carried out to investigate the economics of using PV only and PV with battery as an energy fuel saver in two villages. The results show that the PV energy utilisation is an attractive option with an energy cost of the selected PV ranges between 0.128 and 0.144

Utilizing solar radiation data of 25 locations in Oman, RETScreen software is used to study the economic prospects of solar energy. A solar PV power plant of 5-MW is considered at each of the 25 locations. The results show that the renewable energy produced each year from the PV power plant varies between 9000 MWh at Marmul to 6200 MWh at Sur while the mean value is 7700 MWh of all the 25 locations. The capacity factor of PV plant varies between 20% and 14% and the cost of electricity varies between 210

/MWh for the best location to the least attractive location, respectively. The study shows that the PV energy at the best location is competitive with diesel generation without including the externality costs of diesel. Renewable energy support policies that can be implemented in Oman are also discussed.

This paper presents a case study about the impacts of industrial loads on power quality. A review of harmonics causes, negative impacts, mitigation techniques, quantification indices and limits are presented. Moreover, harmonics measurements at three grid station that supply the three main industrial areas located in the Main Interconnected System (MIS) of Oman are conducted. Measurement results are compared with limits specified by national and international standards.

This paper presents a literature review about unbalance in power systems and a case study about unbalance measurements in the Main Interconnected Network (MIS) of Oman. A review of unbalance causes, negative impacts, mitigation techniques, quantification indices and limits are presented. Moreover, voltage and current unbalance measurements at three grid stations that supply the three main industrial areas located in the MIS of Oman are conducted. Measurement results are compared with limits specified by national and international standards.
