The effect of variation in molecular weight on the antigenicity of dextran in man

Elvin A. Kabat; Ada E. Bezer

Abstract The capacity of a series of dextran fractions of graded molecular weight to stimulate antibody formation in man upon injection of 1 mg. dextran was investigated. A significant drop in capacity to elicit antibody formation was found with dextran fractions of average molecular weight of 51,300 or below. The precipitating antibodies to the dextran fractions were generally similar to those produced to native dextran as determined by quantitative precipitin and oligosaccharide inhibition studies. Wheal and erythema reactions to the dextran fractions were obtained when circulating precipitin levels were above 7–8 μg. antibody N/ml.

Rapid Production of Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis in Rhesus Monkeys by Injection of Brain Tissue With Adjuvants

Elvin A. Kabat; Abner Wolf; Ada E. Bezer

Rapid production in the monkey of a pathological condition resembling acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, marked by demyelination, can be achieved by the use of adjuvants added to rabbit brain emulsions.

Suppression by cortisone of granuloma formation and antibody in guinea pigs receiving egg albumin with Freund adjuvants

Edward E. Fischel; Elvin A. Kabat; Herbert C. Stoerk; Marvin Skolnick; Ada E. Bezer

Abstract The administration of large dosages of cortisone to guinea pigs receiving crystalline egg albumin with the Freund adjuvant resulted in marked reduction of antibody levels and in marked diminution of granuloma formation at the site of the antigen-adjuvant injection. The relationship of granuloma formation to antibody production is discussed in the light of these studies together with previous work on the omission of tubercle bacilli and on experimental encephalomyelitis.
