This study evaluated the presence of biogenic amines in fermented cows and goats milks containing probiotic bacteria, during the first 10 days of chilled storage (4 ± 2°C), when the probiotic strains are most viable. The overall acceptance of both fermented milks, produced using the same starter culture and probiotics, was tested. In both products, the initially high levels of tyramine (560 mg kg−1 means for both fermented milks), the predominant biogenic amine, increased during the storage period, which may be considered this amine as a quality index for fermented milks. The other principal biogenic amines (putrescine, cadaverine, histamine, and spermidine) were produced on days 1–5 of storage, and thereafter decreased. At the end of the 10th day, these amines, respectively, showed values of fermented cows milk 20.26, 29.09, 17.97, and 82.07 mg kg−1; and values of fermented goats milk 22.92, 29.09, 34.85, and 53.85 mg kg−1, in fermented cows and goats milk. Fermented cows milk was well accepted compared to fermented goats milk. The results suggested that the content of biogenic amines may be a criterion for selecting lactic acid bacteria used to produce fermented milks.

BACKGROUND Sexual dysfunction is a common, still poorly understood problem among women. Being or not in a relationship seems to be a risk factor for sexual dysfunction. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the presence of sexual problems, anxiety, and depression in young women and to correlate findings with current relationship status (single, in a committed relationship, or married). METHODS Data were collected trough an online survey from a total of 155 women aged between 20 and 29 years. Sociodemographic data were collected, and both the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale and the Female Sexual Function Index were applied. Data were statistically analyzed using the chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests, and groups were compared in 2 x 2 matrices using the Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS Single women showed a significantly higher prevalence of problems in the lubrication (45.3%), orgasm (53.1%), satisfaction (67.2%), and pain (50%) domains and also in total Female Sexual Function Index scores (60.9%) in comparison with the other groups. Additionally, significantly higher depression scores were found among single women (5.89±3.3) in comparison to those in a committed relationship (4.05±2.83). Anxiety scores were similar in all groups. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that single women have a poorer sexual function and are more likely to have mood disorders in comparison to their peers involved in stable relationships.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the Impact of Event Scale (IES) is to evaluate subjective distress associated with life events. The instrument is not focused on a specific situation, but rather on the particular characteristics of such events. OBJECTIVE: To describe the translation and semantic adaptation of the IES into Brazilian Portuguese. METHODS: The process consisted of translations and back-translations performed by four independent examiners without prior knowledge of the original scale. The synthetic version was developed by a mental health specialist with proficiency in both languages. Subsequently, the adapted scale was applied in an experimental group for evaluation. The new/adapted version was revised and approved by the author of the original instrument. RESULTS: We describe all study phases, including translations, back-translations, and the development of the synthetic version, for each of the 15 items contained in the original instrument. The mental health specialist assisted in adapting the terms employed taking into consideration the construct under investigation in each case. The experimental application allowed to identify potential difficulties in the understanding of specific items and to subsequently adjust these items. Fifteen items were developed in Brazilian Portuguese for this version of the scale. CONCLUSIONS: The methodology employed in the present study allowed us to conduct the cross-cultural adaptation of the IES scale into Brazilian Portuguese.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the case of a patient treated for grief and bereavement for a child using a cognitive-behavioral treatment protocol. CASE DESCRIPTION: Female patient, 28 years old, married, who had lost her older son in an accident 6 weeks prior to the first treatment session. The protocol comprised 12 sessions and involved treatment of cognitive and emotional symptoms, the learning of new abilities, development of strategies to deal with the main somatic complaints and training aimed at the handling of behavioral problems. Results were evaluated using the following instruments: Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), concentrated and sustained attention tests, and Goldbergs General Health Questionnaire (GGHQ). COMMENTS: The patient presented an improvement of depression, anxiety and hopelessness symptoms. All the factors assessed by the GGHQ decreased, whereas concentrated and sustained attention presented an increase in measurements. The treatment protocol adopted proved to be effective based on the factors assessed.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the important role played by sexual function in quality of life, there is a scarcity of instruments in the Brazilian literature specifically designed to assess this aspect, and especially of instruments that can be used with both men and women. The adaptation of the Scale for Quality of Sexual Function (QSF), a unisex scale, is an important step in the production of instruments that allow to compare results obtained in different populations. OBJECTIVE: To describe the translation and semantic adaptation of the QSF into Brazilian Portuguese. METHODS: Instrument adaptation involved five phases: 1) two independent translations, 2) a consensual version produced by translators and experts, 3) evaluation of this version by a different expert, not involved in the previous phases, 4) back translation with evaluation by the author of the original scale, and, finally, 5) application of the final Brazilian Portuguese version in a experimental group. RESULTS: All stages of the adaptation process are described. The participation of experts from the fields of both mental health and human sexuality since the first stage of the process contributed to broader discussions, which allowed to achieve the best possible adequacy for each item, both conceptually and culturally. The experimental application of the final, adapted version of the scale involved both men and women with different educational backgrounds and levels. No difficulties were faced by this group in understanding the items included in the scale. CONCLUSION: The procedures and process herein described successfully allowed to develop a Brazilian Portuguese version of the QSF.

OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its clinical interrelations in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS This was a cross-sectional, prospective study with 100 patients with diagnosed PCOS based on the consensus of Rotterdam (2003). We investigated the interrelationships of MS, with intrinsic PCOS data. Dermatological profile was analyzed, in addition to acanthosis nigricans (AN) in the presence of hirsutism and acne. The use of HOMA-IR (homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance) aimed at the correlation with MS in order to establish the metabolic dysfunction with the state of insulin resistance. RESULTS The mean and standard deviations corresponding figures for age, body mass index and waist circumference were, respectively, 25.72 (± 4.87), 30.63 (± 9.31) and 92.09 (± 18.73). The prevalence of MS was 36% and significantly correlated with BMI, AN, and in 51% of patients the state of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Regarding skin profile, only AN significant correlation with MS. CONCLUSION We propose the routine inspection of metabolic components related to severe PCOS. These parameters configure the cardiovascular risk and such conduct is of undoubted importance to public health.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing search for the psychological treatment of patients with chronic diseases and with clinical indications for the control of physical and psychological capacities has revealed a need for instruments aimed at assessing these patients. Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition that has been widely studied with a focus on the development of new drugs and treatment approaches. However, psychometric instruments developed for this specific population are still rare. OBJECTIVE: To describe the translation and cross-cultural adaptation into Brazilian Portuguese of the Recent-Onset Arthritis Disability (ROAD) index. METHODS: The process involved two translations and back-translations performed by four independent translators, the assessment of all versions obtained, followed by the development of a synthetic version by specialists in the field. The process was completed with an experimental application of the instrument. RESULTS: All stages of the translation/adaptation process are described. No comprehension difficulties were reported by the participants, who had different education levels, ranging from elementary school to university level. CONCLUSION: At the end of the study, the final version of the ROAD index in Brazilian Portuguese is presented. The adapted instrument was considered adequate and equivalent in meaning to the original instrument.INTRODUCTION The increasing search for the psychological treatment of patients with chronic diseases and with clinical indications for the control of physical and psychological capacities has revealed a need for instruments aimed at assessing these patients.
