Perspectives-studies in Translatology | 2005

This article provides an analysis of culturally-marked referential terms in three passages from Brazilian literary works and their translation into French, Italian, Norwegian, and English. This is done in accordance with two theoretical and descriptive matrixes: the Theory of Enunciative Operations (Culioli 2000) and the Translation Strategies Model (Aubert 1997). Despite the lexical, grammatical, and semantic differences between the source texts and the translations, as well as the different meanings they have or potential effects on readers in the target languages, the analysis seems to confirm the existence of equivalence-regulating mechanisms that render translation possible.

Abstract : This article proposes a contribution, in a sort of hermeneutics of praxis, for an initial understanding of the genre commented translation – little discussed, but very common – in Translation Studies, in the academic environment, more specifically, in the context of masters dissertations. To this end, we present examples of two dissertations, the first one, discussing a translation with notes and the second one, a translation with commentary, both from French into Brazilian Portuguese, whose results fit, in our understanding, in this genre. We will also deal with issues related to some published works and a discussion on the relationship between the academic practice of commented translation and its possible theoretical foundations. Keywords : commented translation; annotated translation; academic context; French.
