Abstract The paper presents the evolution of concepts, an overview of research and applications pertaining to reliability in construction production, the use of reserves, robust itineraries, and contingency of time and cost. It describes areas of management advisory systems in relation to the cycle of risk analysis. The article also presents the main trends in different approaches to risk management in construction and construction project processes, such as reliability of production, discount methods, methods of reporting, integrated management together with trends towards standardisation of the investment process management. The discussion is embedded in the specific context: the achievements of trilateral academic colloquia, with participation of Lithuania, Germany and Poland, and a review of work by Professor Kaplinski, the chair of the Polish delegation to the aforementioned colloquia.

Abstract The role and the meaning of a construction company on the market is variable depending on the phase of the life cycle of the company in a given moment. The processes and the services offered by a company are dependent on time and how the business activities of the company are developed as well as the barriers which the company encounters at specific stages of the business activities of the enterprise. In this specific context competitiveness can be understood not only as a comparison of the position of the company with other enterprises functioning within a given sector but as a resultant of possibilities and chances created by an organization in the context of its life cycle. The main aim of this article is to try and assess the influence of the life cycle of a construction company on its market behaviour taking into account the theoretical consideration of competitiveness.

The complexity and need for a comprehensive approach to construction projects programming helps in researching the different methods of the risk estimation for construction projects. The risk estimation, carried out at the planning stage, not only enables rational investment but also the rational project management during construction. The paper concentrates on the possibility of applying the multi-criteria analysis for the selection of construction projects taking the risks into account.
