Reliability, Risk Management, and Contingency of Construction Processes and Projects

Zenonas Turskis; Marcin Gajzler; Agnieszka Dziadosz

Abstract The paper presents the evolution of concepts, an overview of research and applications pertaining to reliability in construction production, the use of reserves, robust itineraries, and contingency of time and cost. It describes areas of management advisory systems in relation to the cycle of risk analysis. The article also presents the main trends in different approaches to risk management in construction and construction project processes, such as reliability of production, discount methods, methods of reporting, integrated management together with trends towards standardisation of the investment process management. The discussion is embedded in the specific context: the achievements of trilateral academic colloquia, with participation of Lithuania, Germany and Poland, and a review of work by Professor Kaplinski, the chair of the Polish delegation to the aforementioned colloquia.

Analysis of knowledge sources and processing in the construction area

Marcin Gajzler

A presentation of knowledge sources in the construction industry studied amounting to several years of experience. Knowledge is an indispensable element of engineering activity. Its characteristics, like the characteristics of the construction industry, require frequent updating of knowledge, and the knowledge itself is often hidden and not accessible directly. In a certain way, this justifies building knowledge-based support systems as tools for faster, more efficient and prompt functioning in the engineering business. Apart from characteristics of knowledge sources, the article presents the sometimes critical overview of methods for acquiring and further processing such knowledge. The usefulness of knowledge acquisition methods tested by the author largely depend on the source itself, as well as the form and content of this knowledge.

Supporting of repairs processes of concrete industrial floors

Marcin Gajzler

AbstractIn the large-scale facilities, including on-site storage or shopping malls, floor plays an important role. It has to meet special requirements regarding mechanical properties, aesthetics and durability. Despite much effort, both in the design and execution phase, cases of damage of the floor happens, causing some specific consequences – often associated with restrictions on use. In such a situation it is required to perform rapid diagnosis and effective repair. One possibility foster this process is the use of advisory system which operates in terms of material and technological solutions. The article points out the limitations resulting from the use of advisory system related to situations of individual and unique damage. In the case of such damage it is necessary to implement research procedures and the use of advisory system turns out to be ineffective.
