Classification of dimension stone wastes

Zeki Karaca; Abdülkerim Pekin; Ahmet Hamdi Deliormanli

PurposeFor countries in which the stone industry is well developed, opposition to quarry and plant waste is gradually increasing. The primary step for waste control and environmental management is to define the problem of concern. In this study, natural building stone wastes were classified for the first time in the literature.MethodsFollowing on-site physical observations and research at more than 50 quarries and 20 plants, stone wastes were classified as (1) solid, (2) dust and (3) semi-slurry, slurry and cake.ConclusionsAs a result of this study, the characteristics of wastes, their main environmental threats and the industries in which wastes could be used were defined for each group.

The Investigation of Hot Spots in Western Anatolia by Geophysical and Mining Approaches

Tolga Gönenç; Oya Pamukçu; C. Pamukcu; Ahmet Hamdi Deliormanli

Abstract In the first part of this article, a short definition of geothermal energy is made and geothermal fields are classified according to their enthalpies. In the second part, general uses of geothermal energy and also the geothermal potential of Turkey and especially of western Anatolia are mentioned. Then, the general geology of the study area moving from three example geothermal fields is depicted and supported by lithological columns. The tectonic structure of our study area, western Anatolia, is profoundly explained and the presence of geothermal fields in this area is backed up by geophysical findings in detail in the final section.

Ground Control for Underground Evaporite Mine in Turkey

T. Onargan; Kerim Kucuk; Ahmet Hamdi Deliormanli; Serkan Saydam; Mehmet Yalçın Koca

Controlling the potential for hazardous ground movements and inundation of an underground mine to within acceptable limits is essential. Both hazards can result in serious harm or death of workers or persons that may inadvertently enter a mining area. The hazards are not always obvious. For example, the outcome of the hazard of a loose rock falling from a sidewall and striking someone can be fatal by either direct physical contact, or damaging the plant in which the worker is working. The presence of certain geological structure (natural planes of weakness in the rock) that override the effectiveness of any ground control measure, is not always obvious from within the mine.

The correlations between the Cerchar abrasivity index and the geomechanical properties of building stones

Mehmet Volkan Ozdogan; Ahmet Hamdi Deliormanli; Hayati Yenice

Cerchar abrasion index (CAI) value is one of the most important test parameters for determining the abrasion value of a cutter or drilling bit. This study aims to present the relation between CAI and various geomechanical properties of building stones. Herein, single and multiple regression analyses were performed to determine the best measure of the relation between CAI and three geomechanical properties. The CAI value is strongly related to the Shore hardness. However, the correlation coefficient increases when we jointly consider the Shore hardness, porosity, and uniaxial compression strength of rock. On the contrary, the analyses results show that the significance level of the CAI value is lower when the CAI value is less than 1. The correlation between CAI and Shore hardness is higher when the CAI values greater than 1 are considered. Also, the R2 value increases from 0.843 to 0.946 in multiple regression analysis.

Monitoring of Landslide at Tuncbilek Open Pit Stripping Area with Terrestrial Laser Scanner and Optical Images

Mehmet Volkan Ozdogan; Ahmet Hamdi Deliormanli

Remote sensing techniques used for providing data on earth sciences have rapidly developed in recent years. Usage of remote sensing for monitoring of slopes have made a lot of progress in the last decade. The most important benefit of remote sensing applications on slope monitoring is safe working conditions with high accurate results. Terrestrial laser scanners are one of the ground-based remote sensing equipment which provide detailed and highly accurate 3D data. In this study terrestrial laser scanner method was carried out for monitoring the landslide at Tuncbilek Open pit stripping area and also optical images were evaluated for determining the development of landslide. The head part of landslide was measured with terrestrial laser scanner at three various dates and the point cloud of head part of landslide were created. Then the three-point cloud were compared. Also six optical satellite image with resolution 1m and below were examined for determining the development of landslide between 2001 and 2013
