Abstract A formula useful for evaluating the commutator anomaly for the Gauss law constraint operator is presented. This formula makes the perturbative calculation of the anomaly much simpler than previous attempts. Furthermore, the commutator anomaly is shown to be derived directly from the non-abelian chiral anomaly and the perturbative calculation is connected to the argument based on cohomology.
