The Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) is developing an advanced hybrid system called Hybridcast to integrate broadband technology with broadcasting. The Hybridcast receiver provides many features, including broadcast-related applications that are executed simultaneously with broadcast programs, precise synchronization of content from different delivery channels, seamless interaction with multiple device types such as mobile terminals, and support for third-party applications. Broadcasters and commercial service providers can offer services through broadcast programs using Hybridcast applications. By using a Hybridcast receiver, viewers can enjoy television (TV) programs with rich and varied applications.

This paper presents an advanced conditional access system (CAS) for digital broadcasting receivers using program-related information called metadata. Digital broadcasting receivers using metadata (DBRM) provide services enhanced by using metadata and content stored in receivers, but it is so easy to edit stored content by using metadata that broadcasters require a content usage control mechanism for DBRM. The advanced CAS provides a secure environment for content and metadata in digital broadcasting receivers by preventing tampering and ensuring that only metadata certified by the broadcaster can be used. To evaluate the advanced CAS, we also developed a smart card and a prototype receiver on a PC. We have demonstrated in an implementation experiment that the advanced CAS can be implemented securely and utilized in broadcasting services using DBRM.

We propose an advanced conditional access system (CAS) for digital broadcasting receivers using program related information, called metadata. The proposed advanced CAS provides a secure system for content and metadata on digital broadcasting receivers, by preventing tampering and ensuring that only metadata certified by the broadcaster can be utilized.

We propose a system architecture for cross-channel application services on advanced Hybridcast that enhances viewers convenience and encourages third-parties other than broadcasters to provide integrated broadcast-broadband services. We demonstrated the feasibility of our proposed architecture and standardized it in June 2014.

This paper proposes a new digital broadcasting receiver platform that has functional expandability by cooperation between receivers and network-connected devices. We developed a Java-based data broadcasting technology that is used for controlling the cooperation and confirmed its feasibility by implementing a prototype system.

This paper presents an RMP (rights management and protection) system for digital broadcasting based on home servers using receivers with home storage devices. This RMP system is suitable for broadcasting, enabling rights protection and advanced access control (term of validity, usage and charge condition, etc.) of stored content on home storage devices.
