Abstract Please click here to download the map associated with this article. The methods used to prepare the morphostructural map of Paraná were based upon morphostructure and morphosculpture concepts to classify the landforms. Information from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission was used to prepare a Digital Elevation Model from which boundaries between different textural units were mapped and geomorphological units identified. The 1:250,000 scale adopted allowed the use of a three level classification of Morphostructural Units, Morphosculptural Units and Morphosculptural Sub-Units. At the 1st level the following morphostructural units were identified: the Atlantic Orogenic Belt, the Sedimentary Basin of Paraná and the Cenozoic Sedimentary Basins and Tectonic Depressions. At the 2nd level the following morphosculptural units were identified: the Serra do Mar (Sea Mountain Range), Isolated Hills and the First Plateau of Paraná, the Second and Third Plateaus, and the Coastal, Fluviomarine and Fluvial Plains. At the 3rd level fifty morphosculptural sub-units were mapped. This work meet the demand that exists for a systematic geomorphological base that will supply information for the States planning system, as well as for geological, ecological-economic and hydrological resources studies, among others.

The characterization of shear zones at the southern portion of the Ribeira Belt, PR, BR, as well as its recognition in depth is a major challenge. Despite the lack of subsurface information, the influence of such structures on the installation and evolution of the Parana Basin during the Phanerozoic is widely accepted. Therefore, in this paper, are applied methods of anomaly enhancement (qualitative analysis) and estimative of the sources depth (semiquantitative analysis), on the aeromagnetic coverage of the Lancinha Shear Zone area (LSZ) in the Parana state, in order to verify its spatial arrangement in subsurface. The processing resulted in the interpretation of magnetic-structural framework of the study area, which was validated by the depth estimative of the magnetic sources (Euler solutions). The results indicated the extension of the Lancinha, Morro Agudo and Itapirapua shear zones under the Parana Basin coverage.

The use of digital imaging techniques in geology is a current trend. This study intends to point a method to investigate the slope stability in rock masses trough images obtained by a terrester laser scanning system. Its application to the geothecnic uses is still initial. The first stage of the study verified the applicability of the technique and its limitations. The object of the study was the Saiva mine, located in the city of Rio Branco do Sul, Parana State, a pertaining calcareous rock deposit for cement manufacture. The analysis method involved field surveys, identification and measurement of geologic structures in three-dimensional digital image, elaboration of structural diagrams, classification of the rock mass, and analysis of the slope stability properly said. The results show that the tool may achieve accurate measurements of rupture plans, similar to the field measurements. Another advantage is that the method permits to work with large number of information simultaneously. One of the great advantages of the method is the possibility of getting structural parameters of areas that in field do not have direct access, for security or setting problems, for example.

This research analyzed the degree of sedimentation in Cachoeira Dourada reservoir Brazil, belonging to the Paranaiba hydrologic catchment basin. Were evaluated bottom sediments of the lake, in an area of 74 km2. Were considered particle and bathymetric parameters. The results, presented on the maps, showed the distribution of the particles chacteristics and allowed to estimate the volume of sediments. The bottom deposits are essentially constituted of silt and clay in the portion near the dike; of fine and very fine sandy material in the middle sector of the reservoir and, in the beginning of the reservoir, we have since silt just large sand. By comparison of topographic data, since the construction of the reservoir, with present measured bathymetric data, the Cachoeira Dourada reservoir lost 38.5 % of its original storing capacity. The expected reservoir useful life, estimated in this research, is of about 145 years, following this deposition rhythm.
