Among the various oilseeds, the castor bean was identified by the National Program for Production and Use of Biodiesel, as the ideal one to promote social development in Brazils northeast region. However the survey shows that the production of this raw material was not competitive for biodiesel production. The research is qualitative, descriptive and exploratory, and multi-case studies were used for their analysis. The instrument used for data collection was a semi-structured personal interview. Visits to production units were also conducted, which enabled data triangulation. Thus, this paper describes each driver and presents a picture of the competitiveness of both agricultural and industrial productions in this chain. The influence of each driver was evaluated using a Likert scale. The results present a clear view of the competitive segments in the analyzed agribusiness chain.

Partnership in supply chain stands out for the need to coordinate the productive activity between different economic agents who often have conflicting goals. Thus, the aim of this paper is to analyse how the partnerships producer/supplier are developed in biodiesel supply chain, through the motivating and facilitating factors that affect this relationship. The methodological aspect involves a multiple case study conducted in three supply chains located in the South Region of Brazil, which have used semi-structured interviews. We involved in this investigation the three largest biodiesel producer plants in the South Region and the two most representative cooperatives in providing raw material for each one of the selected plants, totalling six cooperatives. We realized through the found motivating and facilitating factors that, despite the existing conflicts, both plants and cooperatives have shown the desire to renew the partnership over time.

The national program for production and use of biodiesel (PNPB) intends to include family farming in this sector. Oil Palm cultivation was deemed as ideal for social inclusion in Brazil’s Northern region, and the social projects linked to this production are pilot projects, with about 185 families. This study, which can be classified as multi-case, uses exploratory bibliographic and documental research techniques as well as interviews with the agents inserted in the chain. The study analyzes the governance structure of the biodiesel production chain in Brazil regarding the social link of palm oil. In light of the transaction cost economics (TCE) theory, this chapter analyzes three key transaction attributes between family farmers and industry, namely frequency, uncertainty, and asset specificity, all classified in this study as high ranking. The institutional environment is decisive for the inclusion of palm oil farmers included by means of formal contracts. However, the biodiesel plants located in Brazil’s Northern region—as well as those planning to begin this business—show trends to verticalize their agricultural activities. Thus, the social fuel seal (SCF) assumes its influence in the operating dynamics of that chain’s social pillar.

This paper intends to make some inferences about the relation of competiveness and social inclusion, and interpret in an operational manner the success of South Region soybean familiar growers ascribed to the National Programme for Biofuels Production and Use. It inquires the hypothesis of sharp institutional arrangements acting as an interface in the social system through whose structure the interrelation between competitiveness and social inclusion might take place. The methodology include collected data, statistical treatment of series and modelling the system. The theoretical framework stemmed from Ulrich Becks Risk Society, Garret Hardins Tragedy of the Commons and Eli nor Ostroms Governing the Commons to Cesars three-dimension analyses of governance towards competitiveness. The assessments confirmed that Insitutional Settlements are suitable to preclude Risks, but it needs finer operationalization. The model helped to enlight that the most sensitive variable is profitability and if there are severe perturbations, then the negative feedbacks will trigger social vulnerability.
