Custos logísticos agroindustriais: avaliação do escoamento da soja em grão do Mato Grosso para o mercado externo

Marilin Ribeiro Kussano; Mário Otávio Batalha

The objective of this study is to propose and implement a theoretical framework to calculate the total logistics costs of Brazilian agribusiness products meant for export. The framework was applied to soybeans that are produced in Mato Grosso and exported from the port of Santos. The analyses include unimodal and intermodal routes. From a theoretical viewpoint, the proposed framework includes some variables that are often underestimated in this kind of analysis, such as tax variables. With regard to the empirical results from implementing the framework, the study shows that due to a number of factors and contrary to much of the literature available on the subject, it is not always advantageous for the Mato Grosso soybeans producers to transport their production using intermodal alternatives. Future research suggestions are included at the end of the paper.

Análise dos direcionadores de competitividade sobre a cadeia produtiva de biodiesel: o caso da mamona

Aldara da Silva César; Mário Otávio Batalha

Among the various oilseeds, the castor bean was identified by the National Program for Production and Use of Biodiesel, as the ideal one to promote social development in Brazils northeast region. However the survey shows that the production of this raw material was not competitive for biodiesel production. The research is qualitative, descriptive and exploratory, and multi-case studies were used for their analysis. The instrument used for data collection was a semi-structured personal interview. Visits to production units were also conducted, which enabled data triangulation. Thus, this paper describes each driver and presents a picture of the competitiveness of both agricultural and industrial productions in this chain. The influence of each driver was evaluated using a Likert scale. The results present a clear view of the competitive segments in the analyzed agribusiness chain.

Qualidade na indústria agroalimentar: situação atual e perspectivas

José Carlos de Toledo; Mário Otávio Batalha; Daniel Capaldo Amaral

This paper aims to discuss quality management in six Brazilian agrifood chains: beverages (beer and soft drinks), biscuit, meat, chocolate, processed tomato and dairy. This work is a multi-case exploratory study among 34 firms in those agrifood chains. In a general sense, the firms studied are very different in terms of quality management. The control of the products or raw material for inspection, with special attention to satisfy the governmental health rules, is the most common situation. However, there are strong evidences that this general situation is changing. Several firms are going to employ more advanced systems in quality management (total quality management and quality assurance system).

RFID in the international cattle supply chain: context, consumer privacy and legislation

Priscilla Cristina Cabral Ribeiro; Annibal José Scavarda; Mário Otávio Batalha

This paper aims to describe the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in live cattle supply chain in Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan and the USA. This paper also discusses three themes about RFID in the international cattle chain: the context of RFIDs use, the legislation and consumer privacy. This last theme represents a huge problem to countries that use RFID. They have to create laws to support their discussions about RFID when they evaluate the cost/benefit relation. Global markets require traceability to control the quality of products. The food safety is considered, too. Some operations could be more controlled by RFID, such as processing. This research uses a qualitative method based on documents, scientific papers and secondary data from these countries.

Analyzing effects of external integration on innovations outcomes in large and non-large Brazilian food companies

Robson Nogueira Tomas; Fabrício Pini Rosales; Mário Otávio Batalha; Rosane Lúcia Chicarelli Alcantara

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between external integration and innovation outcomes in the Brazilian food companies. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a survey questionnaire with 84 participants from large and non-large food companies of Brazil, the paper has used linear regression to examine the relationship between external integration and innovation outcomes. Next, the paper used the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney Test to compare the two sets of companies, i.e. large companies (annual sales >US

Besides, radical innovation is directly related to large companies rather than non-large food companies. Furthermore, customer integration is perceived in large food companies rather than non-large. To the best of the knowledge, this is pioneering information in food comp...

Marketing & agribusiness um enfoque estratégico

Mário Otávio Batalha; Andrea Lago da Silva

A simulation model was built to assess the potential gains from an integrated planning of agricultural and industrial production in a citrus agrichain.Integrated planning of agricultural and industrial production increases the efficiency of a citrus agrichain.Agrisystems models are useful to assess the results of integrated planning in an agribusiness system.Improved coordination between agricultural and industrial production can increase the efficiency of the entire agribusiness system. Integrated planning of agricultural and industrial productions in an agrichain may increase the competitiveness of the entire chain and bring benefits to all of its agents. In turn, systems dynamics models could be used to explore and assess quantitatively these benefits. The main objective of this paper was to build a system dynamics model to assess whether integrated mechanisms of agricultural and industrial production planning can improve the competitive performance of the citrus agrisystem in Brazil. The scenarios tested by the model used the gradual introduction of new orange varieties and technological changes in the citrus production. Our paper considers that changes in these parameters have the potential to provide gains to the system by using the expanded capacity implemented by the industries throughout the year, by reducing inventories and blending operations, reducing costs by eliminating seasonal workers, among other factors. The results achieved from the model indicate that integrated production planning mechanisms can effectively improve the coordination of agro-industrial production systems. Moreover, it was demonstrated that models based on Systems Dynamics are suitable to assess these improvements. The model application and assessment results showed that integrated planning can increase the income per hectare of agricultural producers by 70% and the agribusinesses EBITDA margin by 43%. Thus, this study has shown that the use of integrated planning mechanisms is an important strategy for the Brazilian citrus agribusiness system to exploit its growth potential and to remain competitive.

Farm Management Information Systems (FMIS) and technical efficiency: An analysis of citrus farms in Brazil

Marcelo José Carrer; Hildo Meirelles de Souza Filho; Mário Otávio Batalha; Fabiana Ribeiro Rossi

Few researches in Brazil have undertaken the issue of quantification and qualification of public expenditure in S&T and Innovation devoted to agriculture and livestock. This paper presents an innovative evaluation and provides inedited information for public and private decision makers. Expenditure undertook by 48 Brazilian research organizations was evaluated. This set of organizations comprised the universe of federal and state institutes and agencies, as well as some other non-profit organizations, which gave support to research in agriculture and livestock. The results showed that the role played by Embrapa is of primary importance to the National System of Agricultural Research. Some deficiencies and barriers to scientific and technological development in this sector are also revealed. Expenditure allocation in this area should consider the results presented in this paper.
