Apart from the well-known sacred animals (like e.g. the Apis bull) a concept of divinity not only of animals but of animate and inanimate nature in general can be documented for Ancient Egypt. This concept is typically tobe found in scientific writings and lists rooted in the priestly and intellectual elite milieu. In an appendix, the hieratic pBerlin 29027 is edited. On its recto, it contains a list of trees and associated gods.

Father of the Fathers, Mother of the Mothers. God as Father (and Mother) in Ancient Egypt

Alexandra von Lieven

Within the context of divine parenthood, different concepts can be discerned: a creator deity as caring father or mother of the universe with all its gods and humans, deities as parents of the king, deities as parents of divinized human beings and deities as parents of other deities. This chapter treats the aspects relevant to humans, considers parenthood of gods towards other gods as a mythological element as it is relevant for the relationship of gods and humans in one way or the other. Several different deities were credited by the Egyptians with being the creator. Most commonly, the sun god in his form as Re or Atum is the creator and first god. The king as son of the gods as an important part of the royal ideology is well-known in Egyptology. With this also, comparisons with the Christian concept of Jesus as son of god have been drawn. Keywords: ancient Egypt; deities; divine parenthood; sun god

In the myth of Osiris, Seth is presented as a villain murdering from greed for power. The question arises whether the cult centres of Seth shared this negative view of their main deity or whether they had their own version of what had happened. In this paper it is argued that indeed they had a differing version of the myth where it was actually Osiris that wronged Seth by committing adultery with Nephthys.
