A reorganização espacial dos homicídios no Brasil e a tese da interiorização

Luciana Teixeira de Andrade; Alexandre Magno Alves Diniz

This paper analyzes the spatial and temporal distributions of homicides in Brazil since the 1980s, when a sharp increase in death rates occurred. It also analyzes the evolution of homicides during the three following decades (1990s, 2000s and 2010s), when distinct processes took place, such as population reduction, stabilization and growth in different regions of the country. The main source of data for the first part of the paper consisted of various editions of “Mapa da Violencia” (Map of Violence) by WAISELFISZ (1998, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2011). Besides analyzing the spatial and temporal distribution of homicides, we will examine the widespread thesis of internalization, disseminated by these studies. Then, based only on the period of 1999 to 2006, the paper includes a geographical analysis of homicides in Brazil by geographical macro-region, exploring and describing the phenomena of “internalization” and the “spread of violence.” To do so we will use homicide records published by SVS/MS in order to produce risk rates and coropleth mapping at the municipal level. This article’s mainthesis is that the reorganization of violence in Brazil based on homicide records reveals a complex process that goes beyond what is conventionally called the “internalization of violence.” There is a reorganization that follows the logic of agglomeration, with the clear presence of effects of contagion and the formation of clusters of homicides in areas that, in recent years, experienced economic dynamism or the reorganization of their spaces due to changes in land-use and functions.

ANÁLISE ESPACIAL DOS CONDICIONANTES DA CRIMINALIDADE VIOLENTA NO ESTADO DE MINAS GERAIS

Wagner Barbosa Batella; Alexandre Magno Alves Diniz

The phenomenon of crime rises in the beginning of this century as one of the main problems experienced by the inhabitants of large cities. Various sciences have been devoted to the study of this subject, but only in recent decades, the geography has been exploring the spatial dimension of crime through a sub-discipline called Geography of Crime. In the scope of this approach are several contributions to the study of spatial crime. This paper explores the spatial distribution of crimes against persons and property in the State of Minas Gerais, and in response, examines the determinants of this crime. For this, it uses mapping techniques, with aid of geographic information systems, and spatial statistics.

INTERSEÇÕES GEOGRÁFICAS: UMA ANÁLISE DA CARTOGRAFIA FILATÉLICA BRASILEIRA

José Flávio Morais Castro; Alexandre Magno Alves Diniz; Gislaine Fernanda de Barros

The intersections between Philately and Cartography in Brazil have generated over 350 stamps throughout history. This study analyzes the Brazilian philatelic cartography and the geographic intersections taking place within Brazilian postal stamps, intersections deeply related to Cultural Geography. Geographic intersections materialized in the symbolic representation of postal stamps are intimately related to culture and its relationship with space. The analysis of postal stamps carrying maps and other cartographic elements identified the presence of topo- logical, distance, and location relationships, as well as trajectories and flows. On the other hand, maps and projections also carry strong symbolic appeal, bringing information that

O zoneamento morfológico funcional das cidades médias mineiras: o exemplo de Barão de Cocais

Melina Amoni Silveira Alves; Alexandre Magno Alves Diniz

The present work analyses the morpho-functional organization of Barao de Cocais (MG), based on Amorim Filhos (2005) model. This model identifies intra-urban spatial organization, identifying functions and relationships the city establishes with its areas of influence. The fundamental reason for this study is the realization that Barao de Cocais is a clear example of an Emerging Urban Center, result of economic development processes. In addition to it, the city has experienced over the last decades intense economic growth, undergoing significant environmental and social chances, which, in turn, influence the intra-urban (re) organization. Morpho-functional studies of mid-sized cities present new perspectives and Geography enjoys a privileged position with this regard. This work touches various urban aspects of Barao de Cocais, bringing to life multiple geographical facets.
