STRATEGIES FOR REDUCING THE HEIGHT OF POTTED ORNAMENTAL SUNFLOWER PLANTS The objective of the research was to evaluate the use of photoselective plastic shadenet and the effect of plant growth retardant paclobutrazol drench at different concentrations (0; 0.25; 0.50; 0.75 e 1.0 mg L -1 of substrate) on potted plants of sunflower cv Sunbright Supreme grown under protected environment. Two greenhouses were covered with transparent polyethylene film, 0,1 mm thick, and at one of them, the plastic film was applied over a blue photoselective plastic shadenet (30% of shading). Microclimatic and agronomic parameters were evaluated. The solar radiation was reduced by 27.5 % when the shadenet was used, which resulted in a very low influence on the air temperature and humidity in the shelter. Further, the use of the shadenet did not reduced plant height and did not influenced inflorescence diameter, the number of leaves per plant and the interval from transplant to flowering. Nevertheless, paclobutrazol substrate drench decreased plant height, leading to more compact plants that can be grown and commercialized in pots, without any loss to plant quality, since the inflorescence diameter was not affected. The use of the growth retardant delayed the flowering according to the drench concentration, but not exceeding one week.

The application of growth regulators can influence all plant developmental phases, including flowering, development and maturation of fruits and seeds. In this study, we evaluated the physical and chemical characteristics and shelf life of tomato fruits from plants treated with Paclobutrazol - PBZ (0, 50 and 100 mg L-1) in drench application on seedlings, at 15 days after sowing. The fruits were analyzed immediately after harvest and after 5, 10, 15 and 20 days of storage in ambient conditions. The efficiency of treatments and fruit quality were determined by the parameters of weight loss, firmness, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), vitamin C and SS/TA ratio. The experiment was arranged in a 3 x 5 factorial completely randomized design (concentrations of paclobutrazol x days of storage). The applications of paclobutrazol on tomato seedlings, 15 days after sowing, the concentrations of 50 and 100 mg L-1 had no effect on the fruit shelf-life of tomato cv. AF 7631. Increasing concentrations of PBZ resulted in lower weight loss, firmness and acidity of fruits. Soluble solids, vitamin C and SS/TA ratio did not change with increasing concentrations of PBZ. Fruits, regardless of the PBZ concentrations applied to seedlings, reached twenty days of storage (25 ±2 oC and 75±5% UR) fit for consumption, although with significant loss of fresh mass, acidity and firmness.

The use of permanent or partial vegetative cover of the soil in the vineyards can influence the production and the quality of the grape. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the development of the grapevine productivity as well as the qualitative characteristics of ‘Isabel’ grape, in consortium with soil cover plants. The experiment was conducted in the municipality of Itapuranga, GO, and consisted of six treatments established in a randomized block design, in a 3 x 2 factorial scheme, in five replications. The first factor consisted of a plant species cover the soil: Jack Beans (Canavalia ensiformis L. DC), lab-lab (Dolichos lab lab L.) and spontaneous plants. In the second factor, there were two pruning seasons of the grapevine crop, based on the sowing of the cover crops. In other words, the first pruning season in the vine was performed 25 days after sowing (DAS) of the cover plants and the second pruning season in the vine was performed at 55 DAS. In three crop cycles, the soil cover plants consortium with the grapevine does not influence the morphological variables, the productivity, the variables associated with the productivity and the qualitative characteristics of the grape. Different times of pruning influence the productivity and the associated variables in the grape crop. The pruning at 25 days after sowing of the cover plants presented better results for the morphological variables and qualitative characteristics of the grape. Therefore, for the local conditions and for the evaluated time, use of hedge plants did not influence the production of the vines as well as the quality of the grape. However pruning times can affect the development of the vine, reflecting its productivity and quality.
