Antibodies as enzymes

Richard A. Lerner; Alfonso Tramontano

Abstract Enzymes may act as catalysts because they are more closely complementary to the transition state than to the substrate or product of a reaction. Monoclonal antibodies were raised to synthetic analogs of an esterolytic transition state. As predicted, some of these antibodies had catalytic activity.
