The system Cr−Mn−N has been investigated by X-ray technique in three isothermal sections at 800, 1,000 and 1,200°C and at nitrogen pressures ranging from 1 to 800 atm. The binary compounds Cr2N and Mn2N form a complete series of solid solutions. The mononitride phase field extends from CrN to (Cr0.21Mn0.79)N0.80 at 1,000°C and 800 atm N2, whereas at normal pressure only a small portion of chromium atoms in CrN can be substituted by manganese atoms.

The System V−Cr−N has been investigated at 1100 and 1400 °C and at nitrogen pressures between 1 and 1000 atmospheres by X-ray techniques. VN and CrN on the one hand and V2N and Cr2N on the other are forming complete series of solid solutions. The phase field of the mononitride solid solution is dependent on nitrogen pressure and temperature conditions.

The crystal structure of NbMoN1−x has been determined from X-ray powder patterns. It is isotypic with the formerly described1,2 complex nitrides NbCrN and Ta1−xCr1+xN. The tetragonal unit cell contains 6 atoms and belongs to the space groupP4/nmm-D4h7. The lattice parameters are:a=3,095 Å,c=7,799 Å. The structure is characterized by relatively close packed double layers of Nb-atoms and Mo-atoms parallel to the base plane. The nitrogen atoms are within the octahedral interstitial sites.

An isothermal section at 1,100°C and at nitrogen pressures in the range of 1 to 300 bar of the system Ta-Mo-N has been examined by X-ray techniques. The composition range of the ternary Z-phase TaMoN has been investigated with respect to nitrogen content and metal composition. A new ternary phase was found at a composition of Ta3MoN3+x.Within the δ-Mo2N-phase up to 25% of the Mo-atoms can be replaced by Ta-atoms at nitrogen pressures of 300 bar, while only a small amount of the Taatoms can be replaced by Mo-atoms within the Ta-nitrides up to nitrogen pressures of 300 bar. Up to about 50% of the Mo-atoms can be substituted by W-atoms within the Z-phase.

The reaction of tantalum powder with nitrogen under pressure of 300 bar at a temperature of 1200°C leads to Ta5N6 with hexagonal structure:a=5.175 Å,c=10.350 Å.

In the course of studies concerning the ternary system Mo/Ta/N the complex nitride TaMoN was isolated. The crystal structure was determined by X-ray (powder diagram. CuKα): tetragonal unit cell of 6 atoms; space groupP4/nmm-D4h7; lattice parametersa=3.081 Å,c=7.800 Å.

ThC is completely miscible with LaN, CeN, PrN, NdN, SmN and GdN at 1800°C. A miscibility gap is observed in the system ThC−ErN.

In the ternary system Ta/Mo/N a complex nitride of formula Mo(Ta,Mo)2N2 was observed at a nitrogen pressure of 360 bar and a temperature of 1,600°C. The crystal structure was determined from X-ray powder diagrams. The tetragonal unit cell, space groupI4/mmm-D4h17, lattice parametersa=0.3051 nm,c=1.2530 nm contains ten atoms with an arrangement of the metal atoms corresponding to the MoSi2-Type structure.
