Cottonseed meal is a suitable replacement for soybean meal in supplements fed to Nellore heifers grazing Brachiaria decumbens

The objective was to evaluate the effect of substituting soybean meal with cottonseed meal in supplements containing 15% and 30% of crude protein (CP), as well as evaluate the effect of supplementation use, on the performance and nutritional status of Nellore heifers. Forty heifers that were 13 months old and 250 ± 4 kg were kept in five 2.5-ha paddocks covered with Brachiaria decumbens. They were compared as they received different supplements (1 kg/head.day) in a 2 × 2 + 1 factorial – two protein sources (soybean and cottonseed meal) by two protein concentrations (15% and 30%) plus a Control treatment, which was a mineral mix only. The supplemented heifers showed greater weight gains, final bodyweight (P < 0.10) and higher intake of all evaluated nutrients (P < 0.10), as well as greater digestibility of these nutrients compared with those from the Control treatment. The animals fed supplements containing 15% CP had lower digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, CP and neutral detergent insoluble fibre corrected for ash and protein. These animals also had lower total digestible nutrients as compared with those which received a supplement containing 30% CP (P < 0.10). The treatments containing cottonseed meal provided greater dry matter digestibility (P < 0.10). Cottonseed meal can fully substitute soybean meal to grazing heifers during the rainy season. Supplements containing 30% of CP provided greater digestibility than 15% CP supplements. Supplemented animals had better performance.

Grazing Behavior and Locomotion of Young Bulls Receiving Different Nutritional Plans in a Tropical Pasture

The objectives of this study were to compare visual observation and an electronic grazing time method and to evaluate the effects of nutritional plans on intake, grazing behavior and horizontal and vertical locomotion of young bulls in a tropical pasture. Thirty-nine Nellore young bulls with an average body weight of 345±9.3 kg kept in pasture were used. The experimental treatments consisted of: restricted: animals kept in a plot with a low mass of forage receiving mineral mixture only; control: animals receiving mineral mixture only; HPHC: a high protein and high carbohydrate supplement; HPLC: a high protein and low carbohydrate supplement; LPHC: a low protein and high carbohydrate supplement; LPLC: a low protein and low carbohydrate supplement. GPS collars equipped with activity sensors were used. Information about head position, latitude, longitude and altitude were recorded. Daytime grazing behavioral patterns monitored by a continuous focal animal recording method was compared to behavior estimated by the activity sensor. Feed intake was estimated by a marker method. The Restricted group presented lower (p<0.05) intake of dry matter and TDN. However, difference in dry matter intake was not found (p>0.05) between non-supplemented and supplemented animals. Difference was not found (p>0.05) in daytime grazing time obtained by visual observation or the activity sensor method. The restricted group showed longer (p<0.05) grazing time (9.58 h/d) than other groups, but difference was not found (p>0.05) in the grazing time between Control (8.35 h/d) and supplemented animals (8.03 h/d). The Restricted group presented lower (p<0.05) horizontal locomotion distance (2,168 m/d) in comparison to other groups (2,580.6 m/d). It can be concluded that the use of activity sensor methods can be recommended due to their being similar to visual observation and able to record 24-h/d. While supplements with high carbohydrates reduce pasture intake, they do not change grazing behavior. Moderate supplementation (until 50% of protein requirement and 30% of energy requirement) of beef cattle on tropical pasture has no effect on daily locomotion.

Evaluation of mathematical models to describe growth of grazing young bulls

The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of different mathematical models to describe growth of grazing beef cattle. Data of 20 Nellore bulls with initial weight of 129±28.1 kg and final weight of 405±62.0 kg were used. The animals were randomly divided into four plots and placed on B. decumbens Stapf pastures. Three plots received concentrate supplement with different protein profiles and the fourth plot received only mineral supplement. Animals were weighed every 28 days to design growth curve of full body weight. Five mathematical models were evaluated to describe animal growth: Multiphase, Linear, Logarithmic, Gompertz and Logistic models. Assessment of adequacy of the models was performed by using coefficient of determination, simultaneous F-test for identity of parameters, concordance correlation coefficient, root of the mean square error of prediction and partition of the mean square error of prediction. The analysis of the pairwise mean square error of prediction and the delta Akaikes information criterion were used to compare the models for accuracy and precision. Evaluation of all the tested models showed that all of them were able to predict variability among animals. However, Gompertz, Logarithmic and Logistic models created individual predictions that were not satisfactory. Models differed from each other concerning accuracy and precision; the best were in the following order: Multiphase, Linear, Gompertz, Logarithmic and Logistic. The Multiphase model was more efficient than the others for description of grazing beef cattle growth.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of grazing nursing young bulls supplemented with concentrates with different protein levels during the rainy-dry season transition. Fifty two crossbred Nellore calves with initial mean age of 130 days were divided into four lots, housed in paddocks of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf and received one of the four different supplementation strategies: three different concentrate supplements, or mineral salt (control). The levels of protein in the concentrate supplements varied. After 45 days, the nutritional evaluation of animals, which included the prediction of intake and digestion of nutrients and characteristics of protein metabolism, was made. The prediction of intake and digestibility used the indicators LIPE®, titanium dioxide and neutral detergent fiber indigestible. Urine and blood samples were collected too. The supplementation effect, and the linear and quadratic effects of the level of protein in the concentrate were evaluated by the decomposition of the sum of squares into orthogonal contrasts, adopting α = 0.10. The concentrate intake replaced part of the pasture ingested by the calves and increased protein intake, the digestibility of dry and organic matter, the total digestible nutrients content, and the nitrogen excretion in urine. The level of protein in the supplement has a positive linear effect on the daily protein intake, the digestibility of all nutrients and the total digestible nutrients content, and quadratic effect on the excretion of nitrogen as urea in the urine.

Performance and nutritional evaluation of beef cattle raised on pasture, castrated at different ages, with and without supplementation

The objective of this study was to evaluate performance and nutritional traits of beef cattle raised on pastures, castrated at different ages, with and without supplementation. Forty-four crossbred young bulls with predominance of Zebu breed at initial average age of 120±30 days were used in the experiment. Animals were distributed in a completely randomized design in a factorial arrangement with four ages of castration and two supplementation systems. The animals were distributed into four groups and placed on Brachiaria decumbens Stapf pastures, where they were fed concentrate supplementation or mineral salt ad libtum (control). Animals were castrated at 120, 240 and 360 days of age with average body weight of 115, 175 and 276 kg, castrated or not, in each supplementation group. Concentrate supplement composition and the amount supplied to the animals varied according to the time of the year and development phase of the animals. Trials were carried out to evaluate nutritional variables in each of the following phases: suckling, growth in the dry season and growth in the dry/rainy transition season. Concentrate supplementation improved the use of pasture, although it may have caused substitutive effect in all seasons evaluated. Castration of the animals before the dry season impaired animal development until the following dry/rainy transition season, especially when carried out during weaning. Concentrate supply may reduce some effects of this stress.
