Aos 12 meses a crianca apresenta novas aquisicoes de linguagem e locomocao que a permitem realizar movimentos de afastamento e reaproximacao do cuidador. Assim, a mae ocupa papel fundamental, pois deve proporcionar oportunidades para descobertas e favorecer exploracoes. Este estudo investigou o desenvolvimento da crianca aos 12 mesese os sentimentos maternos em relacao a esse momento. Participaram 28 mulheres, de nivel socioeconomico variado, comidades entre 20 e 37 anos, cujos filhos tinham 12 meses. Foi realizada uma entrevista semi-estruturada sobre a experienciada maternidade e o desenvolvimento da crianca. A analise de conteudo revelou a riqueza das novas aquisicoes e seu impacto nos sentimentos maternos. As maes relataram sentimentos ambivalentes de gratificacao e realizacao, mas tambem de maiordemanda e dedicacao. Dada a importância desse periodo, torna-se fundamental que a mae seja capaz de adaptar-se as novas aquisicoes infantis e que esteja disponivel para partilhar de suas experiencias.

The authors examine social-class differences in parents’ child-rearing values for autonomy, self-direction, and conformity and the extent to which their values are influenced by their perceptions of their developing children’s characteristics. Parents from 25 middle-class or working-class families in a Brazilian city participated in interviews, observations, and completed Kohn’s Q-Sort measure when their children were 3, 36, and 72 months of age. Parents’ child-rearing values differed significantly by social class: middle-class parents were more likely to value autonomy and self-direction in their children, whereas working-class parents were more likely to value conformity. In addition, the strength and direction of parental values changed significantly as their children developed. Parents were less likely to value autonomy and self-direction when their children were 36 months than when they were either 3 or 72 months. Middle-class parents were more likely to value conformity when their children were 36 than when they were younger or older.

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar las percepciones maternales y los sentimientos delante de las adquisiciones del desarrollo del nino de los 18 a los 20 meses. Participaron 14 madres primiparas, con edades entre 20 y 37 anos, con nivel socioeconomico variado y que conviven con sus respectivos maridos en la region metropolitana de Porto Alegre. Fue realizada una entrevista semi-estructurada, submetida al analisis cualitativo del contenido, que abordo la experiencia de la maternidad y el desarrollo del nino. Se busco examinar semejanzas y particularidades de las opiniones y sentimientos maternales frente a las adquisiciones del desarrollo infantil. Los resultados indicaron adquisiciones intensas de la lengua, de la motricidad, socio-emocionales y intelectuales-cognitivas. Los ninos exigieron mayor atencion y disponibilidad de las madres, causando sensaciones positivas, negativas y ambivalentes en las mismas. Es importante que la madre entienda las adquisiciones apropiadas de este periodo ya que contribuira para un trato mas adecuado en una relacion que oscila entre la dependencia y la independencia del nino.

The present study aimed to investigate the expectations and feelings of pregnant women regarding their second child. A total of 25 second-time mothers, aged 28 to 43, in the last trimester of their second pregnancy, took part in the study. They lived with their partners, in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A semi-structured interview was carried out, which was analyzed according to qualitative content analysis. The mothers reported their expectations concerning the second child regarding gender, name, and physical and emotional characteristics, often making comparisons with the firstborn. Mothers who are expecting a new baby are faced with the challenge of welcoming and accepting the unknown that the new infant represents. The meaning the second child has for the mother must be explored in future studies on the subject.

Creating a space for more than one child is a challenge for the mother that already has other children at a pre-school age. The present case study was carried out based on a research application of the Bick method of infant observation. The baby and his family were observed weekly, for 12 months. He belonged to a family, consisting of a mother, a father and their four boys, a baby and three siblings aged two, three, and four years old. The mother gradually created a space for welcoming the observer as well as the baby. The observer′s countertransference reactions were essential and the receptiveness of the observer enabled the mother to use her for expressing her feelings albeit silently.

The aim of the present study was to investigate maternal feelings towards their childs developmental acquisitions from 24 to 28 months. Sixteen primiparous mothers, aged 21 to 36, from different socioeconomic backgrounds, took part in the study. They lived with their partners, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. A semistructured interview was held, which was analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. The analysis focused on maternal experience and child development. Mothers reported a growth of vocabulary, motor skills, understanding and memory capacity, as well as the oscillation in the child´s independence and dependence. Maternal feelings of pleasure, admiration and gratification were expressed as well as feelings of tiredness, irritation and stress. These changes and the way mother and child deal with them help to strengthen their relationships with the outside world, and also influence their mother-child interactions.
