Atherosclerosis is a coronary disease where deposition of lipids in the arteries leads to problems of blood circulation. The present work evaluates the action of the flavonoids morin, quercetin and nicotinic acid isolated in association on lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemi c rats. Blood serum levels cholesterol, cholesterol-HDL, and triacylglycerids have been analysed following the intraperitoneal administration of the flavonoid compounds dissolved in propyleneglyc ol by in doses of 5mg/kg body weight. Quercetin presented the largest percentual reduction of cholesterol. The best results for cholesterol-HDL have been obtained with-nicotinic acid alone while morin-nicotinic acid combination showed the best triacylglycerols results. Results showed that flavonoids could be beneficious in the treatment of coronary diseases.

The objective of this work was to study the influence of the combinations: biphosphonate (alendronate of sodium) + statin (calcic atorvastatin), biphosphonate (sodium alendronate) + flavonoid (ipriflavone) and statin (calcic atorvastatin) + flavonoid (ipriflavone) in female rats with osteoporosis induced by the glucocorticoid dexamethasone. The influence of the combinations of those drugs was observed through tests of the biochemical markers of bone remodeling, such as, levels of serum calcium and phosphorus and bone alkaline phosphatase and through histomorphometric exam, visualizing the bone trabecular density. Through the evaluation of the bone trabecular density it was possible to verify the clear increase in any group of treated animals. The combinations with biphosphonate presented high rates of bone tissue restoration, reaching higher values than those of normal animals. The results obtained with biochemical markers were not statistically significant and did not subsidies the diagnosis and the follow of the osteoporosis. However, the histomorphometric evaluation allowed us the static and dynamic analyses as well as detection of tissue alterations in the bone metabolic unit, particularly in the trabecular bone.

By using an experimental model of dexamethasone-induced osteoporosis we investigated the effects of different therapeutic schemes combining sodium alendronate (SA) and simvastatin on bone mineral and protein composition, microstructural and mechanical remodeling. Wistar rats were randomized into eight groups: G1: non-osteoporotic; G2: osteoporotic; G3, G4, and G5: osteoporotic+SA (0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mg/kg, respectively); G6, G7, and G8: osteoporotic+SA (0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mg/kg, respectively)+simvastatin (0.4, 0.6, and 1 mg/kg, respectively). Osteoporosis was induced by dexamethasone (7 mg/kg, i.m.) once a week for 5 weeks. All treatments were administered for 8 weeks. Dexamethasone increased serum levels of alkaline phosphatase, calcium, phosphorus, and urea, especially in non-treated animals, which showed severe osteoporosis. Dexamethasone also induced bone microstructural fragility and reduced mechanical resistance, which were associated with a marked depletion in mineral mass, collagenous and non-collagenous protein levels in cortical and cancellous bone. Although SA has attenuated osteoporosis severity, the effectiveness of drug therapy was enhanced combining alendronate and simvastatin. The restoration in serum parameters, organic and inorganic bone mass, and mechanical behavior showed a dose-dependent effect that was potentially related to the complementary mechanisms by which each drug acts to induce bone anabolism, accelerating tissue repair.

The effects of biochanin A, isolated or in association with the natural dyes anthocyanin and carmin, on the metabolism of lipids in rats were investigated. The compounds, dissolved in propylene glycol, were given intraperitoneally using two doses of 5mg/kg of body weigth. The first dose of these substances was given after using triton to induce high levels of blood lipids, and the second dose was given 20 hours later. Cholesterol, cholesterol-HDL, and triacylglyceriols were measured in the blood 43 hours after inoculation. Results showed that the association biochanin A + anthocyanin, and biochanin A + carmin resulted in the largest reduction of blood cholesterol and triacylglycerols.
