The yellow nail syndrome is a rare disease, in which there is a triad of lymphedema, pleural effusion and slow-growing dystrophic yellow nails. Many associations have already been described; among them, chronic respiratory tract diseases, autoimmune disorders, malignancies and immunodeficiency conditions. Only one third of cases in the literature show all findings. The case reported next is an example of the classical triad.

Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare neutrophilic disease of unknown origin that is associated with systemic diseases in 50% of cases. We report a case of atypical pyoderma gangrenosum in a 39- year-old man with psoriasis associated and optimal response to cyclosporin. This case report shows the diversity of clinical manifestations of this disease, the difficult diagnosis and the therapeutic options currently available.

Myiasis refers to Diptera larvae infesting vertebrate animals. There are two forms of the disease: primary and secondary. In primary myiasis, fly larvae invade and develop in healthy tissue; in secondary myiasis, flies lay their eggs in skin ulcerations, and the larvae develop in tissue necrosis products. Furuncular myiasis is a type of primary myiasis. Treatment for it consists of techniques such as the production of localized hypoxia to force the emergence of the larvae, and mechanical or surgical removal of the maggots. These techniques, however, are painful and often unsuccessful. We propose a new technique for extraction of myiasis larvae, which might facilitate the surgical procedure and constitute a virtually painless and aesthetic option for the patient.

BACKGROUND: Lupus erythematosus is a chronic multifactorial auto-immune and inflammatory disease of the connective tissue with skin or multisystemic manifestations, characterized by production of auto-antibodies against cell components. OBJECTIVE: To assess clinical and epidemiological aspects, and particularly smoking habits in patients with lupus erythematosus. METHODS: Records of 80 patients seen between 2002 and 2006 at the Dermatology Outpatients´s Clinic, Teaching Hospital, Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, with diagnosis of cutaneous or systemic lupus erythematosus, were retrospectively assessed. RESULTS: The mean age at onset was 40 years, with a female predominance over males (5.6:1), and 60 of patients were Caucasian. Among diverse clinical manifestations, 45 had discoid lupus erythematosus, 43.75 had acute lupus erythematosus, 6.25 had subacute lupus erythematosus, 2.5 presented with lupus erythematosus tumidus, 1.25 had lupus erythematosus profundus and 1.25 had perniotic lupus erythematosus. The majority of patients were smokers (71.25 ), 6.25 were former smokers and 22.5 non-smokers. CONCLUSION: There is evidence that cigarette smoking is a risk factor for the development of cutaneous lupus erythematosus with or without systemic manifestations, in genetically predisposed individuals.

The authors present three hair transplantation cases in which the receptor incisions were made in a variety of ways: CO2 laser vaporization orifices, in addition to which a lateral cold incision was performed. This lateral incision makes it easier to introduce micrografts by allowing air to be released and improves the fixation of the grafts by giving some elasticity to the orifice. The patients were previously beta blocked to prevent the beta-adrenergic action of epinefrin.
