To determine the influence of physical factors on oviposition of Lutzomyia migonei (Diptera: Psychodidae) under laboratory conditions, two sets of experiments were performed. The first test was to determine the influence of the size of pots on oviposition. Gravid flies were placed individually or in groups in different oviposition pots. The number of eggs laid, oviposition time and survival of gravid females were observed. In the second experiment, the influence of irregular surfaces on oviposition was studied. The results suggested that physical space was not an important factor in the oviposition behavior of L. migonei and that the flies showed a preference to oviposit on irregular horizontal surfaces in response to thigmotropic behavior.

This article has the objective of estimating the probability that individuals registered with the General Social Security Regime (RGPS) in Brazil would pass from the state of working to that of permanent disability, by sex and by age, from 1999 to 2002. The results show that the risk of men retiring due to disability rises with age until the age of 65, and then falls. For women, the probability of retiring due to permanent disability continues to rise up to the highest age measured. This pattern can be explained in part by the competition between, on the one hand, the risk of retiring due to disability and, in contrast, other benefits provided by the Brazilian social security system to individuals who have postponed retirement or have not yet fulfilled the minimum requirements for such. Since the information in this article refers to the vast majority of persons registered with the social security regime, it is intended as a contribution for a broader understanding of disability, especially in the areas of insurance and social security.

The objective of this article is to construct life tables of invalids among urban beneficiaries of the General Regime of the National Brazilian Social Security System. Assuming that the number of deaths in each table follows a Poisson distribution, the death rates by simple age were graduated through Bayesian statistical methods, by using the Gompertz-Makehan parametric model and using Bayesian statistical inferences. Life tables were constructed for death rates of men and women, and credibility intervals were set up for the parameters and components of the model, as well as for the death rates and functions of the board. An application was made by calculating an annuity and the actuarial liabilities.

In this study, mortality tables by sex are constructed for persons retired due to permanent disability by the Brazilian Social Security System, using data on benefits that were active at some moment during the period between January 1, 1999 and December 31, 2002.
