Investigation into the Loss Density Distribution of IGBT Devices

G. Trigkidis; Amar Bousbaine; R. Thorn

The major cause of power semiconductor devices failure is heat. This is no surprise since industry and commercial applications continually require higher power densities and decreased packaging solutions. The pressure is now concentrated on thermal simulation tools that need to take into account detailed device structures and different physical phenomena/parameters that take place inside the semiconductor structure during operation. This paper explains a method to calculate in detail the power loss distribution inside the IGBT device

Modelling and Simulation of a Multi-level DC-DC Converter for HEV and EV Applications

Amar Bousbaine; Ebimobowei Yabefa

This paper presents the analytical development, modelling, analysis and simulation of a 42V/14V dc/dc converter for HEV and EV based architecture for automotive electrical power system. A ten level dc-dc converter is explored that can overcome some of the limitations of traditional automotive electrical power system topology that use 14V power net. The effectiveness of the developed multi-level dc/dc converter is verified through simulation results using MatLab/Simulink.

Development of Automotive DC/DC Converter based Centralised Architecture

Mohamed A. Shrud; Ahmad H. Kharaz; Amar Bousbaine; Ahmed Faris

This paper presents the technical development, modeling, analysis and simulation of a 42V/14V dc/dc converter based architecture for dual/high voltage automotive electrical power system. It overcomes some of the limitations of traditional automotive electrical power system topology that use 14V power net. The proposed system simulation model composed of a 4kW/42V power generation system buffered by a 36V energy storage battery and a 1kW/14V interleaved six-phase buck converter. The effectiveness of the developed model of the complete dc/dc converter-based centralised system architecture is verified through simulation results using control-oriented simulator, MatLab/Simulink.

Validation of Multiphase Flowmeters Using Capacitance Sensing Techniques

Ahmed A. Abou-Arkoub; Richard Thorn; Amar Bousbaine

As the capabilities of multiphase flowmeters increase, the problems of how to validate the performance of such instruments on-line also increases. This paper considers the extent to which simple capacitance sensors could be used to determine the carrier, dispersed phase, and flow regime of a multiphase flow. It is shown that such techniques could form the basis of a simple and robust validation unit, which would be retro-fitted to a pipeline close to the flowmeter being monitored in order to validate its operation and provide an early warning of instrument malfunction.
