Validation of the Nursing Activities Score in Portuguese intensive care units

Objective: to describe the process of adaptation and validation of the Nursing Activities Score to the Portuguese context. Method: this was a pilot study of adaptation and validation of the Nursing Activities Score with a sample consisting of 67 patients hospitalized in the intensive care units of three Portuguese hospitals. The construct validity was assessed through factor analysis procedures and the internal consistency of the items was measured through the Cronbachs alpha coefficient. Results: a mean workload value of 63.04% (SD = 14.25; Median = 61.30) was obtained. Psychometric data revealed a Cronbachs alpha of 0.71 in the total scale, indicating an acceptable accuracy. Confirmatory factor analysis suggested an appropriate adjustment between the model and the data (χ2(199) = 214.5, p = 0.214; CFI = 0.95; RMSA = 0.035). Conclusion: in the present study, the Portuguese version of the Nursing Activities Score was found to be a valid instrument, enabling a safe assessment of the workload of nurses.

Políticas de saúde do Sul da Europa e desregulação das relações de trabalho: um olhar sobre Portugal

Under the Troika Memorandum (2011-2015), health policies in Portugal know a political agenda, business and organizational schedule guided by the principles of privatisation, deregulation and underfinancing of public services by the State. In this article, the authors provide a review of the literature on health systems in the countries of the Southern European countries, highlighting the Portuguese situation regarding reform processes and major health inequalities before and during the economic crisis. Complementarily, the testimonies of different professionals of the health sector (doctor, nurse, therapeutics technician, unions and heads of care units) are summoned. Based on an exploratory study, it is our purpose to discuss political-organisational transformations and their consequences in the deregulation and precariousness of labour relations in the health sector. Nursing students’ perceptions of training processes in clinical supervision contexts

Background: This article falls within the field of nursing supervision and describes a qualitative and quantitative study carried out in a Nursing School. Objectives: To describe representations and experiences of students and supervisors’ professional activity in clinical supervision contexts; to analyze the school-hospital articulation in training processes in clinical supervision contexts; to discuss the role of nursing supervision in the school-hospital articulation; to identify quality principles for pre-service nursing training with a focus on the activity in professional and supervision contexts. Methodology: Data were collected through a questionnaire to 92 students in clinical contexts (2nd year) and semi-structured interviews with a group of 5 students and 2 supervisors. Results: We found some strengths and weaknesses in the training processes regarding the role of supervision and the link between theory and practice in the development of professional knowledge. Conclusion: The need to strengthen inter-institutional relationships and promote reflective, dialogic supervision practices is highlighted.

This study aimed to validate for the Portuguese population the Dietary Intent Scale (DIS), a measure of dietary restraint. Methods The sample comprised 1077 participants (415 males), aged between 14 and 34 years old. Males presented a mean age of 18.09 (SD=3.32) and a mean BMI of 22.03 (SD=3.28), and females showed a mean age of 17.73 (SD=3.38) and a mean BMI of 21.32 (SD=2.86). No differences were found between genders regarding age. Results A reliability analysis revealed that DIS presented a Cronbach’s alpha of .92 and that three items did not contribute for the scale’s internal consistency. Therefore, and since their content was similar to other items, these three items were excluded. A confirmatory factor analysis revealed the adequacy of the final 6-item DIS, showing good local (SRWs between .64 and .94) and global adjustments (X(8)=12.07, p=.148; CFI=1.00; TLI=1.00; RMSEA=.03, p=.876). Furthermore, the model showed invariance between genders. Finally, DIS revealed a good convergent validity (eating psychopathology, eating restraint, inflexible eating, body image-related experiential avoidance, body imagerelated cognitive fusion, depression, anxiety, and stress) and temporal validity (r = .82) Discussion DIS seems to be a short and valid measure of eating restraint, highly correlated with an important measure of eating psychopathology (EDE-Q). The DIS may represent an advantage in relation to other existing measures, particularly for research and community interventions regarding eating difficulties.Introduction: Continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring provides important information about the cardiovascular system condition. Invasive methods are accurate but denote increased risk. Non-invasive methods are safe but less reliable and don ́t provide continuous information. An alternative approach for a continuous, non-invasive measurement of BP is based on changes in pulse transit time (PTT). PTT is defined as the time delay between the R-wave of the electrocardiogram (ECG) and the peak value of the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal acquired in the patient finger on the same cardiac cycle.
