Evaluation of the Psychometric Properties of NOC Outcomes “Anxiety Level” and “Anxiety Self-Control” in a Portuguese Outpatient Sample: Evaluation of the Psychometric Properties of NOC Outcomes

PURPOSE To adopt the language and to evaluate the psychometric properties of “Anxiety level” and “Anxiety self-control” NOC outcomes in Portuguese adult patients. METHODS Methodological design. FINDINGS The final European Portuguese version of the NOC outcome “Anxiety level,” composed by 16 indicators, proved excellent internal consistency. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was forced to three factors. The NOC outcome “Anxiety self-control,” composed of nine indicators, demonstrated a questionable internal consistency. EFA was forced to two factors. CONCLUSIONS European Portuguese versions of the studied NOC outcomes proved to be tools with acceptable psychometric properties for evaluating anxiety in Portuguese patients. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE This study contributed to the development of NOC language and to the enrichment of nursings body of knowledge. OBJETIVO Adaptar a linguagem e avaliar as propriedades psicometricas dos resultados NOC “Nivel de ansiedade” e “Autocontrolo da ansiedade” em utentes portugueses adultos. METODOS Estudo metodologico. RESULTADOS A versao portuguesa do resultado NOC “Nivel de ansiedade”, composta por 16 indicadores, apresentou uma excelente consistencia interna. A analise fatorial exploratoria (AFE) foi forcada a tres dimensoes. O resultado NOC “Autocontrolo da ansiedade”, composto por nove indicadores, apresentou uma consistencia interna questionavel. A AFE foi forcada a duas dimensoes. CONCLUSOES As versoes portuguesas dos resultados NOC estudados sao instrumentos com propriedades psicometricas aceitaveis para avaliar a ansiedade em utentes portugueses. IMPLICACOES PARA A PRATICA DE ENFERMAGEM Este estudo contribuiu para o desenvolvimento da linguagem NOC e para enriquecer o corpo de conhecimento de Enfermagem.

Eficácia do programa IncARE na sobrecarga dos cuidadores informais de pessoas idosas após um AVC

“Efficacy of the program InCARE in the burden of informal caregivers of older people after a stroke” BACKGROUND: Stroke is the leading cause of disability in Portuguese older people. Despite the advances in the health care system, allowing more stroke survivors living at home be cared by their families, the evidence suggests higher levels of burden in caregivers, dissatisfaction with the quantity and quality of information they received and with the support received. The state-of-the art, also suggests, there is a need for implementing a psychoeducational intervention programmes based on problem solving and on practical skills acquisition to reduce burden in caregivers. AIM: The study aimed at: (1) assessing the practical skills of caregivers of older stroke survivors; (2) evaluating an intervention program to reduce burden in caregivers during the 1st (M1) and 3rd (M2) month after the intervention. METHODOS: The quasi-experimental study was developed with 174 informal caregivers of dependent older stroke survivors, allocated in: i) experimental group (n = 85); and ii) control group (n = 89). Data collection occurred in community-dwelling of health care units in northern Portugal. RESULTS: The data suggests higher levels of burden in the 1st and 3rd month of the control group in comparison with the experimental group, in which a decrease after a follow-up was verified. (M2). CONCLUSION: The results of the InCARE program suggests the importance of early structured interventions to achieve practical skills by informal caregivers of older stroke survivors as a therapeutic intervention to reduce burden.

This study aimed to validate for the Portuguese population the Dietary Intent Scale (DIS), a measure of dietary restraint. Methods The sample comprised 1077 participants (415 males), aged between 14 and 34 years old. Males presented a mean age of 18.09 (SD=3.32) and a mean BMI of 22.03 (SD=3.28), and females showed a mean age of 17.73 (SD=3.38) and a mean BMI of 21.32 (SD=2.86). No differences were found between genders regarding age. Results A reliability analysis revealed that DIS presented a Cronbach’s alpha of .92 and that three items did not contribute for the scale’s internal consistency. Therefore, and since their content was similar to other items, these three items were excluded. A confirmatory factor analysis revealed the adequacy of the final 6-item DIS, showing good local (SRWs between .64 and .94) and global adjustments (X(8)=12.07, p=.148; CFI=1.00; TLI=1.00; RMSEA=.03, p=.876). Furthermore, the model showed invariance between genders. Finally, DIS revealed a good convergent validity (eating psychopathology, eating restraint, inflexible eating, body image-related experiential avoidance, body imagerelated cognitive fusion, depression, anxiety, and stress) and temporal validity (r = .82) Discussion DIS seems to be a short and valid measure of eating restraint, highly correlated with an important measure of eating psychopathology (EDE-Q). The DIS may represent an advantage in relation to other existing measures, particularly for research and community interventions regarding eating difficulties.Introduction: Continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring provides important information about the cardiovascular system condition. Invasive methods are accurate but denote increased risk. Non-invasive methods are safe but less reliable and don ́t provide continuous information. An alternative approach for a continuous, non-invasive measurement of BP is based on changes in pulse transit time (PTT). PTT is defined as the time delay between the R-wave of the electrocardiogram (ECG) and the peak value of the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal acquired in the patient finger on the same cardiac cycle.
