ANÁLISE DA PREVALÊNCIA DE LESÕES EM SURFISTAS DO LITORAL PARANAENSE

Gabriela Chueiri de Moraes; Ana Tereza Bittencourt Guimarães; Anna Raquel Silveira Gomes

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries of surfers from the Paranás seacoast. METHODS: Sixty men (27 ± 6 years) completed a surf semi structured questionnaire (category, time of daily practice, frequency and exercises performed before and/or after surfing) and characteristics of injuries induced by this sport. A descriptive analysis of the data on distribution of the relative frequency was performed. RESULTS: It was found that 70% of the respondents practiced surfing as a relaxing activity, 28% were amateurs and 2% were professionals, who were surfing for 10 years or more. Most of them surfed between 2 to 4 times a week during 2 to 4 hours a day. The most common exercise performed before surfing was upper and lower limbs stretching and no exercises at all was done after practice. The most common injury was contusion (29%), lower limb was the most affected segment (46%) and the most common cause of injury was due to contact with the board (52%). The interruption period mostly reported was 1-3 months and the most frequent treatment was taking medicines. CONCLUSIONS: Recreational was the predominant category of surfers with lower limbs contusion as the most common musculoskeletal injury, resulting from contact with the board, being treated with medication and rest. Level of Evidence II, Retrospective Study.Citação: Moraes GC, Guimarães ATB, Gomes ARS. Análise da prevalência de lesões em surfistas do litoral paranaense. Acta Ortop Bras. BACKGROUND Piercings are body embellishments commonly seen in young people, however their inherent risk of infection and scarring disorders are less divulged. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prevalence of body piercings among medical students and their possible dermatologic consequences. METHODS Cross-sectional study with 58 medical students, by means of a structured questionnaire covering socio-demographic characteristics, technical issues related to the piercing and characteristics of the dermatologic complications. RESULTS The sample was predominantly female (86.2%), with mean age 24 ± 3 years. The placement of the first piercing occurred during adolescence (median age 15), without medical supervision (91.4%) or knowledge of parents/guardians (74%). Most piercings were made of metal alloy/stainless steel, in a dumbbell model (51.7%), inserted in the umbilical area (53.5%) or ear (41.4%), with frequent cutaneous reactions in the first six months post-piercing. Hypertrophic scarring, pain, swelling and infection (p<0.05) had significantly higher frequencies among those with navel piercings. CONCLUSION Piercing insertion occurred during adolescence. Local inflammatory and infectious reactions were common. Scarring disorders and dermatitis appeared in the long term. There is need for preventive and educational activities, starting with those in the academic environment.

Objective The aims of this study were to evaluate the reliability of three range of motion tests (Straight Leg Raise, Modified Thomas, and Duncan-Ely) using photographic measurements in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (SD) and with typical development (TD). Methods A cross-sectional test-retest design was applied to compare muscle-tendon unit shortening tests between groups. Results The tests showed reliability that ranged from good to excellent (ICC > 0.8), except for the Thomas Test for the bi-articular hip flexor muscle-tendon unit of the TD group (ICC = 0.7). Differences between groups were found in all tests (p 0.05). Conclusion Children with SD presents a smaller range of motion than the TD group. However, the Thomas Test for the bi-articular hip flexor muscles was unable to determine differences between children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy from that with typical development.

Manoela de Paula Ferreira; Vera Lúcia Israel; Ana Tereza Bittencourt Guimarães

This study aimed to verify the effect of a program of functional exercise on body balance in the institutionalized elderly. Six elderly persons participated and were evaluated and reevaluated after 3.5 weeks using the Berg Balance Scale. The program consisted of 14 meetings of 60 minutes each, 4 times a week. The function descriptive analysis of Microsoft 2010 was used. An improved scale score (48.3 ± 4.1 vs 42.8 ± 6.2, P = 0.002) and a decreased risk of falls (84% ± 43% vs 46% ± 29%, P = 0.002) were found. Functional training was sufficient to improve balance and reduce the number of falls.
