Objective To investigate body image dissatisfaction in physical education college students and verify which factors are specifically associated to dissatisfaction with thinness and with overweight. Methods Participated 299 college students (173 men and 126 women) with mean age of 23.14 (4.93) years, of the baccalaureate and degree courses in Physical Education, from a public university of Florianopolis-SC. Through self-applied questionnaire, the academics answered sociodemographic questions, about body image (figure rating scale) and referred their body mass and stature measurements to compute body mass index. Results The prevalence of body image dissatisfaction was 76.6% (27.4% were dissatisfied with thinness and 49.0% with overweight), being higher in females (82.5%). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed association between dissatisfaction with thinness and the variables gender (male) and weight status (normal weight) and between dissatisfaction with overweight and the variables: gender (female), weight status (overweight) and course (degree). Conclusion It is necessary that undergraduate courses have contents aimed to the student health, addressing aspects related to eating behavior, obesity, body image and the implications that it can provide in a future teaching practice.

Purpose. the purpose of this study was to examine the agreement between body mass index and body fat estimate among adolescents with different physical activity (PA) levels, using the sum of skinfolds as our criterion. Methods. this was a cross-sectional study with 732 adolescent participants (63.4% of which were female), with an average age of 16.1 (±1.1) years old. the reference method used to estimate the body fat was the sum of triceps and subscapular skinfolds. BMI was calculated using body mass and height values. the PA was estimated using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire – IPAQ (short version). Bland-Altman diagrams were used to evaluate the agreement between BMI and the sum of skinfolds and were transformed into a Z score. Results. For males, BMI overestimated body fat among those who did (mean error = -0.67; p < 0.001) and those who did not (mean error = -0.45; p < 0.001) meet the recommended PA values with a greater error observed for those who met PA recommendations. For females, BMI underestimated body fat among those who met (mean error = 0.29; p < 0.001) and did not meet (mean error = 0.41; p < 0.001) the recommended PA values with a greater error observed for those who did not meet recommendations.. Conclusions. Compared to sum of skinfolds, there was weak agreement between BMI and body fat among adolescents, especially among those with higher or lower PA levels. the use of other methods to estimate body fat in such cases is strongly recommended.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the association between perceived stress in adolescence, body weight and romantic relationships. Methods: Participants were 2,571 adolescents (56.1% female), with mean age of 16.6±1.2 years, who were students of public schools in Amazonas. The adolescents answered a questionnaire with sociodemographic questions (sex, age group, school year, study shift, maternal schooling and family income) and related to body weight dissatisfaction, romantic relationships (identified by the relationship status - with or without a partner) and perceived stress (dependent variable). Binary Logistic Regression was used to test the association between perceived stress, body weight dissatisfaction and romantic relationships. The analysis was adjusted by sex and age group. Results: The prevalence of perceived stress was 19.0% (95% confidence interval - 95%CI 17.5-20.3), and was higher among girls (23.2%; 95%CI 21.5-24.5) than boys (13.6%; 95%CI 12.2-14.7). Adolescents with partners (OR 1.76; 95%CI 1.14-2.71) and those who wanted to lose body weight (OR 1.53; 95%IC 1.18-1.98) were more likely to perceive themselves as stressed. Conclusions: There was an association between perceived stress, relationship status and body weight dissatisfaction. Regardless of sex and age group, the adolescents with a partner and those who wanted to lose weight were more likely to perceive themselves as stressed. Girls should receive special attention, as well as adolescents with partners and those who want to lose body weight.
