Extending System Design Tools to Facilitate Systemic Innovation in Prospective Ergonomics

Andre Liem

Through an extensive literature review, this article aims to promote systemic innovation, which is presently too much influenced by context and too limited by rationality. As such, the article argues for the use of systems design methods and tools for anticipating future needs in the development of innovative products and services. Building upon theoretical concepts, such as “Bounded Rationality”, “Situated Design” and “Practice Theory”, systems design methods and tools, such as the Function-Task Interaction Matrix Method and Dependence Structure Matrix, should be made more comprehensive by extending technical and user elements with contextual elements. These matrices help to identify problem fields as well as opportunities by juxtaposing and force-fitting technical, user, and contextual elements.

The role of Prototyping in Ergonomic Practice and Research to Anticipate New Products and Services

Andre Liem

This article argues for the dual role of prototyping in facilitating abductive thinking in research and practice within “Ergonomics” and “Design”. Moreover, this duality also pertains to the development of innovative commodities, as well as in the acquisition of new knowledge.

A Sustainability and User-Centered Approach Towards Extending the Life-Cycle of Mobile Computers

The aim of this article is to provide an understanding of cognitive and physical barriers concerning extending the lifecycle of mobile computers. Reference to Triandis’ theory of interpersonal behavior, (1) attitudes; (2) contextual factors; (3) personal capabilities, and (4) habits will be discussed to overcome these barriers. A survey among 449 subjects, complemented by an expert interview, was conducted to find out motivators and resistors for retaining computers though renewal processes. Results were structured and presented using a Computer Life-Cycle Extension Model. The emphasis on “Emotion” indicated that a pragmatic view by understanding what practical things to do and what knowledge to seek for is not enough. To motivate end-users to prolong the life of their computers, emotional incentives are equally important to extend the life-cycle of their mobile computers. For example, personalized design can also make users feel more attached to their computers, and thereby facilitate an emotional connection. This connection can make users more inclined to keep their computers longer. Moreover, a need has been observed to break away from stereotyping computer culture and usage.

A Culturally Driven Approach for the Development of Innovative User Interface Design Concepts

Andre Liem

This article attempts to argue that social, political and economic perspectives supported by a cultural understanding of societies and regions are the cornerstones for a more comprehensive external analysis. Extreme trends and developments in nations´ political, economical and social situation are a source for innovation in the development of user interface designs. As social, political and economical developments in a society are difficult to change overnight; various case studies have illustrated the potential role of interface design in improving the negative aspects of these developments, usually represented by extreme cultural trends. A bottom-up analysis of the case studies resulted in the six (6) preliminary categories, which function as a guide for a broader approach in terms of future external analysis and goal finding. However at this moment, it cannot be guaranteed that design concepts generated from a cultural difference perspective are more innovative than others.

An ergonomic case study on the interior customisation of Fast Response Cars (FRCs) based on vehicle adaptation

Andre Liem

This paper discusses the interior customisation of two Police Fast Response Cars (FRCs), namely Volvo V70 Station Wagon and Mitsubishi Space Wagon, from an ergonomic design perspective. Customisation of the front areas addressed the interaction among the electronic communication devices, front-passenger and driver, whereas the retrieval and storage of equipment and tools were explored in the rear interiors. Concerning the rear interior space, the Mitsubishi performed better than the Volvo. A three-layered design improved accessibility of equipment. The installation of on-board computer facilities, secure placement under extreme driving conditions was suggested near the centre console at the front passenger seat.
