A Framework of Empirical Study Through Design Practice for Industrial Ceramic Sanitary Ware Design

Rusmadiah Anwar; Shahriman Zainal Abidin; Oskar Hasdinor Hassan

Conventional industrial ceramic design investigation faced numerous dilemmas especially on the design methodology. The unclear design approach practised among the designers comes to the technical hitches to introduce a new product design. A previous study on design practice shows the possibilities to overcome these problems. Understanding of Research Triangle shows a concrete design practice was still under-discovered among researchers. This opportunity comes to the inspiration of assembling ceramic sanitary ware design (CSWD) framework in conjunction to problem-solution product development. The proposed method was divided into three stages: (1) understanding the role of designer and formgiving in product development, (2) identifying the design problem and the gap, (3) setting up verbal protocol analysis (VPA) and (4) capturing and sketching profile in CSWD. The amateur-advance-expert designer will be brought to the artificial design environment to record all design activities. The outcome of this framework will benefit the designer especially in the ceramic industry in order to come out with a new product segment.

Rusmadiah Anwar; Shahriman Zainal Abidin; Oskar Hasdinor Hassan

This research discusses on proposing a new design methodology for industrial ceramic based on “formgiving” perspective. A significant finding of formgiving between two different domains which, industrial design and engineering design has defined the potential new design segment introduced in ceramic industries. However, with the predisposed of aesthetics and human sensation, it insists to investigate the principle of design requirements among the designer, artifacts and users, in order to aesthetically solve the appearance and consequences of form development. The aim of this study is to propose a principle of solution embarks with ablution tub as sub-sanitary ware design rooted in user’s expectations. Finally, the study concludes the most important pattern of formgiving used in between designer and design situations.

Theoretical Framework for Ceramic Design Studies Facing Advanced Mathematical Educational Research

Rusmadiah Anwar; Oskar Hasdinor Hassan; Shahriman Zainal Abidin

Labu sayong is one of the significant traditional ceramic crafts in the Malay world and appreciated for its aesthetics, values and motifs. There is so much of mathematical pattern language used in the process of structuring the pattern and form itself. Without any thought about the mathematics principles underlying the process, it will never end up with a variety of designs constructed. This paper will discuss about the mathematical design-thinking framework for the ceramicist especially the Malays and its contribution in the process of developing the industrial ceramic wares. Identified from the observations and derived from ethnographic design theory which put into practice. The investigation will be in the range on some of the structured theoretical frameworks, which observational design approaches as main measurement, accuracy, equality, transformations and estimation in exploring the development process. Finally, the paper concludes with the possibility of Malay design challenge identified by implementing the protocol analysis procedures, offering valid comparison of experimental data across the whole range of research undertaken.

Understanding methodological solution in design situation of novice designer

Rusmadiah Anwar; Shahriman Zainal Abidin; Oskar Hasdinor Hassan

This research discusses about categorizing new approach of industrial design research through design practice. Ironically, most of the novice designer design flaws and perspectives were not acquiescence with the design solutions. They probably faced with the unruly conclusion between structured and emergent design reasoning. The focus of this research is on understanding of the role demarcation of references and subject matter, which preferred as guidance of the novice designer to embark new ideas. The strategies of form development activities were adapted to a form-giving design theory. Finally, the design practice was analyzed through empirical design studies. It is aims to uncover the design thinking approaches and their standpoint on design solutions. The results also discussed the solution to both initial problems of design activities. At the end of this study, the guidelines of design methodology for novice designer were established in determining the core relation between design structure, design appearance and design limitation.

This chapter discusses the issues, transformation, and challenges of creating a national product design identity in the context of a multiethnic country. Generally, there is no evidence that the characteristics of product design identity can be generalized based on the agreement of multiethnic decision making. In the context of Malaysia, the main issue is about the identification of a national identity for local product design. This led to the question of whether we can establish Malaysian product design identity using multiethnic preferences. By looking at the mutual agreement between all ethnic preferences before the formation of Malaysia, it is plausible to use a single dominant of culture and heritage influence from Malay ethnics because the privilege was clearly written in the Social Contract, Reid Commission, and Malaysia’s Constitution. The transformation should be in line with the sectors of education, research, industry, and government agency. The challenges of today and the future were to take a stand about uniformity of Malaysian product design identity and it should be acceptable for other ethnic groups in Malaysia. In conclusion, we propose that more studies about Malay ethnic culture and heritage should be given in the perspective of semantic and syntactic interpretations.

This paper discusses the need to identify the rule that can be used as a unified point of references to styling DNA in automotive design. Recently, there is no promising model or framework that can be used in design methodology for styling DNA. In reference to that, inquiry research activity was carried out among selected Malaysian public and styling designers in PROTON. Findings from the study indicated that the perception of designers positively correlate with preferences of Malaysian users. Furthermore, results showed that designers consistently tried to create a concept via sketches based on a specific area of the car. Consequently, the sequence maps or locus have been established in this research and the challenges revealed how it can be used as a starting point to build or create characters as embodied agents of character traits concerning brand and identity of a car design.

Relative Theory of Tactile Iconography Array Configuration for a Blind Group

Verly Veto Vermol; Rusmadiah Anwar; Oskar Hasdinor Hassan; Shahriman Zainal Abidin

The need of a walkway or pathway for a blind group is very important in order to lead them to their destination. Conventional relief tactile blocks with guiding information in Malaysia, however, provide only two guiding signs, which are warning and leading signs. The research was conducted in five phases. These phases comprised the small topic activities of resource, analysis, design, findings, test, result, and discussion. The theory provided the possibility of exploring the environment in a three-way relation of reciprocity: active way, iconic way, and symbolic way.

Work in Progress: Mapping the development of quality sensuous response through Blind and Visually Impaired group (BVIG) touch interaction

Verly Veto Vermol; Rusmadiah Anwar; Oskar Hasdinor Hassan; Shahriman Zainal Abidin

This paper presents the knowledge of investigating the haptic product experience among the Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI) user. It is important that by providing more complete, practical and useful assessment activity for the BVI, designer may build a basis-structured user centered model approach to haptics product design for this group. The knowledge in understanding the visually impaired group sensitivity in touching skills will elucidate potential of reasoning enhancement in multiple design disciplines and category towards generating new design idea or development solely for this target group. Physical appearance of a designed product justifies philosophical effect through the way they are perceived. In order of creating good end products, there is a need of knowledge on the capabilities and limitations of general human touch; the technical possibilities of designing for touch; and how resulting designs affect haptic interaction and the overall use [1]. The issues on this paper will be covering general responses of touching activities through visually impaired perspective by looking at positive aspects, negative aspects, ethics and conclusions. In order of finding how the aptitudes are articulated, the verbal protocol analysis will be carried out through interviewing three respondents of Visually Impaired Group under B1 classification, which considered as total visual impairment or total blindness according to Malaysian Association for the Blind in 2012.

The environmental-driven elements towards ecological systems of furniture design

Mohd Hasni Chumiran; Shahriman Zainal Abidin; Anuar Sirat

This paper discusses the engagement of furniture design with environmental elements and ecological system in design literature. The purpose is to establish a gap in the area of ecological design. A sustained relationship of field study has resulted in two major areas of designs: industrial design (ID) and manufacturing technology design (MT), while one minor field found is business and industrial marketing (IM). The term ID describes the creative thinking involved in industrial cycle methodologies. Instead, aesthetics and ergonomics, it applies manufacturing engineering principles to develop ecological system in forms of design. As for the term MT, structured measures are commonly applied on the manufacturing and industrial technology engineering. Another prominent term is the “green design and manufacturing” or “environmentally conscious manufacturing” (ECM), which means the material sources go through processed systems in producing the goods with several operations; large production scale to meet the ecological consumer behaviour, and the materials must be specified in the earliest stages due to the design and production stages. Furthermore, IM remains a minor area that is slightly important since the environmental communication is derived from the ecological system issues. Based on greenhouse gases (GHG) function, this initiative drives business to business communication (B2B) that could be considered as ecological economics player. Normally, the manufacturing sector complies with the national economic transformation agenda for the international intention. Finally, combination of three areas of study may lead to the probable finding of the ecological influence or elements and the extraction of environmental design, standards and theory. Hence, this topic is to focus on the criteria, capability and characteristics (3C) of ecological system with the awareness of producing the recycling product design (forms context) and to help practicing designers identify problems, issues and gaps in relation to ecological concept using suitable methodologies and its applications.

Historical Analysis on Product Form Structure Establishment in Malaysian Industrial Design Practices

Natrina Mariane P. Toyong; Shahriman Zainal Abidin; S’harin Mokhtar; Linda Abd. Hamid

This paper looks at establishing a research framework for National Design Heritage by looking at the form characteristic of modern Malaysian artefacts. Since the establishment of formal modern design education in Malaysia, there have been numerous attempts to understand the Design DNA that can be representative of Malaysian products or Malaysian Design Heritage. However, unlike other studies, Malaysian Design Heritage has not been explored from a historical perspective. This is also because formal modern design and design education only began in Malaysia in 1967, to reach its fiftieth year in 2017. These studies nonetheless, has set precedents towards building a framework for a National Design Heritage from a historical perspective, providing a platform for future product branding and aligning national level design activities. Following that, the paper hopes (1) to propose that formally archived artefact in Malaysia is an adequate comprehension of the nation’s design activities, (2) to identify visual form characteristics attributable to the design identity of modern Malaysian artefacts, based on form, content and context analysis and finally (3) to identify the scope of Industrial Design activities in Malaysia since its introduction in 1967.
