Sources of identity and community among highly identified football fans in Germany. An empirical categorisation of differentiation processes

‘Differentiation’ is identified as a key category, and an empirical system of differentiation is developed. The key category is divided into two subcategories, which are further dimensionalized. The analysis finds that highly identified fans differentiate themselves from other fans (both from their own club and from rival clubs) and strive for positive distinction. Violent acts as extreme forms of differentiation are identity-establishing for some of these fans. Confrontations with rival fans are actively sought to extend team competitions concerning the best support into a physical and violent plane and to enforce territorial claims.

Zum Konzept der Gruppenbezogenen Menschenfeindlichkeit im lokalen Raum

Der Begriff Gruppenbezogene Menschenfeindlichkeit (GMF) wurde im Rahmen der gleichnamigen, zehnjahrigen Langzeitstudie unter der Leitung von Wilhelm Heitmeyer (fur einen Uberblick siehe Heitmeyer 2002-2012) eingefuhrt. Ausgangspunkt war die Einschatzung, dass die Wurde des Menschen in der bundesdeutschen Gesellschaft antastbar ist (Heitmeyer 2002: 3). Die Humanitat oder Inhumanitat einer Gesellschaft konne daran ermessen werden, ob oder in welchem Ausmas bestimmten Gruppen in der Gesellschaft mit einer feindseligen Haltung gegenuber getreten werde, so eine der grundlegenden Voruberlegungen (Heitmeyer 2002: 2).

Zwischen Vertrauen und Ausgrenzung

Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende qualitative Fallanalyse befasst sich mit dem Einstieg junger Menschen in die Szene der sogenannten Ultras und dessen Bedingungsfaktoren. Dazu wurden zwei problemzentrierte Interviews mit einer weiblichen Anwärterin und einem männlichen Anwärter auf eine Mitgliedschaft in einer Ultra-Gruppe geführt. Es wird den Fragen nachgegangen, wie die AspirantInnen den Einstieg bewältigen und welche Bedeutung der Kategorie des Geschlechts zukommt. Dabei werden die je subjektiven Erwartungen, Prozesse, Bedeutungsgehalte und Konflikte analysiert. Es zeigt sich, dass trotz einiger Parallelen die Einstiegsprozesse sehr unterschiedlich verlaufen. Dabei kommt insbesondere den Kategorien des Geschlechts, des Beziehungsstandes sowie des Alters zentrale Bedeutung zu. Der Beitrag erweitert damit die Forschung über Fußballfangruppen um den wichtigen Prozess des Szenezugangs. Summary The qualitative case study at hand deals with young people’s entry into Ultras groups and the determining factors that promote their admission to these circles. We conducted problem-centered interviews with one aspiring male and one aspiring female member of an Ultras group. We explored the questions of how aspiring members go through the process of joining and what role the category of gender plays in the process, analyzing subjective expectations, processes, meanings, and conflicts. We found that despite some parallels, the process of entering these groups unfolds in very different ways for men and women. The category of gender, the aspiring member’s relationship status, and age proved to be significant factors. The article expands the research on football fan groups by investigating the important process of entry into these relatively closed circles.

Socio-educational work with football fans in Germany: principles, practice and conflicts

The paper explores socio-educational fan work in Germany, focusing on the part played by fan projects in preventing football-related violence. It supplies an overview of the German model of repression and prevention since its beginnings in the 1990s. The work of fan projects in Germany is institutionalized under German social law. The article outlines the theoretical concepts of socio-educational work on which the fan projects are based and shows that fan projects play an important role in mediating the conflict interactions between clubs, fans and police. Insights into difficulties and conflicts are debated. Although fan projects are very successful, a systematic evaluation is lacking. Advantages, pitfalls and future prospects are discussed.
