Optical carrier reduction via the use of a Si3N4 ring resonator notch filter (RRNF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated as a means for improving the modulation efficiency in 10-GHz radio-over-fiber (RoF) links. The realized filter is characterized in both the optical and microwave domains and is then exploited in an RoF test bed. Experimental results show a modulation depth improvement of up to 9 dB.

Variable optical carrier reduction via the use of a Si(3)N(4) ring resonator notch filter with tunable extinction ratio is demonstrated in a 10 GHz radio-over-fiber system for improving the modulation efficiency. The extinction of the filter notch is tuned with micro-heaters, by setting the Mach-Zehnder coupler of the ring. Experimental results showing a modulation depth improvement of up to 20 dB are provided.

A high Q-factor optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on an active recirculating delay line and a dual-loop topology is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The implemented OEO provides a very stable oscillation at 5.4 GHz with a sub-Hz 3-dB bandwidth and a Q-factor in excess of 1010. A single side-band phase noise of -74 dBc/Hz is measured at 10 kHz offset, while side modes are significantly suppressed for offset values in the range of 100 kHz-1 MHz.

A dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator incorporating an optoelectronic recirculating delay line in order to circumvent the limitations of optical coherence associated with all-optical loops is demonstrated. The optoelectronic oscillator produces a very stable signal at 5.4 GHz (suitable for WLAN 802.11n and 4G-WiMAX systems) with a sub-Hz 3-dB bandwidth and a Q-factor in excess of 1010. A phase noise of −115 dBc/Hz is recorded at 10 kHz offset, owing to the reduction in phase induced intensity noise, whilst side modes are significantly suppressed for offset values in the range 100 kHz – 1 MHz.

An optoelectronic oscillator topology based on a class AB analogue optical link is proposed. The motivation for this approach is based on the unique property of class AB links for mitigating both shot noise and relative intensity noise contributions. The class AB optoelectronic oscillator is compared with a conventional single loop optoelectronic oscillator.
