We report novel results for the implementation of incoherent radio-frequency (RF) photonic filters with negative coefficients using a newly developed 2 /spl times/ 1 Mach-Zehnder modulator device featuring /spl pi/-shifted RF modulation over the lightwave signals entering the device at complementary input ports. The characteristics of the novel device are described and the device used to implement an eight-tap (positive and negative) transversal RF photonic reconfigurable filter with square-type resonances.

This paper presents a WDM architecture of a photonic analogue to digital converter (ADC) for direct RF sampling in radar and EW digital receiver, the architecture is based on the parallel operation of an array of state-of-the-art electronic ADCs while the photonic sampling is achieved using a mode locked laser (MLL). The parallelisation is implemented through a novel technique for the slicing of the optical spectrum and the time interleaving of the colored pulses. A high dynamic range by bandwidth product of the ADC can be obtained. The MLL overcomes the jitter limitation in conventional electronic quartz references in electronic ADCs and can be also fiber optic distributed as reference clock for the Radar Tx and Rx functions. The test realized on the prototype is reported demonstrating a 5 Gbps sampling rate ADC.

Variable optical carrier reduction via the use of a Si(3)N(4) ring resonator notch filter with tunable extinction ratio is demonstrated in a 10 GHz radio-over-fiber system for improving the modulation efficiency. The extinction of the filter notch is tuned with micro-heaters, by setting the Mach-Zehnder coupler of the ring. Experimental results showing a modulation depth improvement of up to 20 dB are provided.

In this paper, we present a complete and closed theoretical model and its subsequent practical verification for a special type of Mach-Zehnder electrooptical modulator with a 2times1 optical ports configuration (two optical inputs/one output). This device present special modulation features due to its own optical structure. Its employment for modulation of millimeter and microwave signals and their further transmission through dispersive fiber is addressed, showing interesting and particular features respect to the carrier suppression effect or dispersion fading.

1-Phenyl-2-propanone (P-2-P), also known as benzyl methyl ketone (BMK), is a colorless or slightly yellowish liquid. It presents a density similar to that of water as well as a pleasant scent. Even if there are few legitimate uses of BMK such as in the production of the pharmaceutical drug propyl-hexedrine, most frequently BMK is used as an illicit compound for the illegal manufacture of amphetamine. Actually, BMK is identified by classical methods such as gas chromatography, NMR or HPLC. These methods are costly, time-consuming and require the presence of trained operators. It appears obvious that there is an urgent need to develop a new easy and fast method that allows us to detect the presence of traces of BMK. In this work, a new chemically synthesized BMK derivative covalently attached to an immunological carrier was used for producing antibodies against the BMK molecules. A fluorescence polarization-based bioassay was developed by using the produced anti-BMK antibodies and the BMK derivative. The assay exhibits interesting analytical performances with a limit of detection of less than 100 nM and an almost linear response up to 600 nM. Interestingly, the proposed assay could be performed using a customizable portable instrumentation and could be used by non-instructed personnel at custom borders and checkpoints or for quick spot-checks.
