Abstract This review provides some background to infrared spectroscopy including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It is not meant to be complete or exhaustive but to provide the reader with sufficient background for selected applications in pharmaceutical analysis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a fast and nondestructive analytical method. Associated with chemometrics, it can become a powerful tool for the pharmaceutical industry. Indeed, it is suitable for analysis of solid, liquid, and biotechnological pharmaceutical forms. This review focuses on pharmaceutical FTIR applications used for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Moreover, it can be implemented during pharmaceutical development, in production for process monitoring, and in quality control laboratories.

The research has been focusing on some connection between the chemical composition of the papers obtained by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and the nature of the fillers, determined by energy dispersion X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectroscopy. The present paper corroborates the FTIR and EDXRF results obtained for some historical papers from books of the XIX-th and XX-th centuries, from private collections. These analytical results allowed a first approximation of technological paper composition and of the age determination of the samples. This analytical method can elaborate some properly methods for paper documents preservation, taking into account the aging and degradation processes of the historical paper.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a powerful nondestructive technique for characterizing crystalline materials. It provides information on structures, phases, preferred crystal orientations (texture), and other structural parameters, such as average grain size, crystallinity, strain, and crystal defects. X-ray diffraction peaks are produced by constructive interference of a monochromatic beam of X-rays scattered at specific angles from each set of lattice planes in a sample. The peak intensities are determined by the distribution of atoms within the lattice. Consequently, the X-ray diffraction pattern is the fingerprint of periodic atomic arrangements in a given material. This review summarizes the scientific trends associated with the rapid development of the technique of X-ray diffraction over the past five years pertaining to the fields of pharmaceuticals, forensic science, geological applications, microelectronics, and glass manufacturing, as well as in corrosion analysis.

Abstract: Vibrational spectroscopy includes several different techniques, the most important of which are mid-infrared (IR), near-IR, and Raman spectroscopy. Raman and mid-IR spectroscopy are complementary techniques and usually both are required to completely measure the vibrational modes of a molecule. Vibrational spectrometry covers a series of well-established analytical methodologies suitable to be employed for both qualitative and quantitative purposes. In the first part of this review, we will focus on theoretical aspects related to vibrational techniques; in the second part, the most important papers, published during the period 2005–2014, related to clinical analysis performed with vibrational spectroscopy techniques will be critically discussed.

Abstract: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a fast and nondestructive analytical method. Associated with chemometrics, it is a powerful tool for research and industry. The present review discusses the antioxidant activities assay of some plants (fruits, leaves, aerian part) with medicinal properties using an FTIR spectrophotometric method in comparison with other ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometric methods. A good correlation was found between the different methods used for measuring the antioxidant capacity of some of these herbs.

Enalapril maleate (EMa) belongs to a new class of antihypertensive agents known as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. This paper describes the development of a microbial biosensor for EMa using induced Bacillus subitilis cells. This biosensor measures the acceleration of respiration during specific metabolic pathways of this drug. It has been applied, with good results, for determination of the active ingredient in the pharmaceutical tablet formulations.

A Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometric method diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was developed for the rapid, direct measurement of mebendazole in drugs. Conventional KBr-spectra and DRIFTS-spectra were compared for best determination of active substance in drug formulations. Two chemometric approaches, partial least-squares (PLS2) and principal component regression (PCR+) methods were used in data procesing. The best results were obtained with the PLS2 method.

This review provides a brief background to the application of infrared spectroscopy, including Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, in biological fluids. It is not meant to be complete or exhaustive but to provide the reader with sufficient background for selected applications in cancer diagnostics. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) is a fast and nondestructive analytical method. The infrared spectrum of a mixture serves as the basis to quantitate its constituents, and a number of common clinical chemistry tests have proven to be feasible using this approach. This review focuses on biomedical FT-IR applications, published in the period 2009–2013, used for early detection of cancer through qualitative and quantitative analysis.
