Drag and mass transfer in multiple drop slow motion in a power law fluid

Andrzej Jarzȩbski; Janusz J. Malinowski

Abstract Upper and lower bounds on the drag coefficient for a swarm of drops or bubbles moving in a power law fluid are obtained using variational principles and a free surface cell model. The effects of a wide range of shear thinning, holdup and viscosity parameters on the drag and mass transfer rate are discussed. Recently published predictions of the approximate analytical solution are found to be reasonable if shear thinning behaviour is not pronounced.

Anatomical distribution of lipids and sterols in Macoma balthica (L.)

Andrzej Jarzȩbski; Roman Wenne; Gerhard Habermehl

1. 1. The anatomical distribution of lipids and sterols in Macoma balthica (Bivalvia, Mollusca) was investigated. 2. 2. Lipids were accumulated mainly in the hepatopancreas of M. balthica what is connected with their role in energy metabolism of this organism. 3. 3. The sterols were uniformly distributed among the different organs of this clam.

Transient mass and heat transfer from drops or bubbles in slow non-Newtonian flows

Andrzej Jarzȩbski; Janusz J. Malinowski

Abstract A theoretical analysis of transient mass (heat) transfer to or from liquid droplets or gas bubbles into a power-law or a Carreau fluid is carried out, and the effects of holdup, shear thinning and elastic properties are discussed. A modified form of the Chao criterion is derived, from which the condition for steady-state transfer can be simply determined.

Major sterols of bivalve molluscs from the inner puck bay, southern baltic

Andrzej Jarzȩbski

1. 1. The wide-spread Baltic Sea bivalve molluscs (collected from the Inner Puck Bay): Macoma balthica, Mytilus edulis, Cardium glaucum, and Mya arenaria were investigated for their sterol composition. 2. 2. The qualitative sterol composition of these bivalve molluscs was similar and comparable with that of the other representatives of Bivalvia, but there were observed some quantative differences.

Effect of drying with supercritical carbon dioxide on enhancement and modification of polymeric catalysts' activity

Andrzej Jarzȩbski; Andrzej I. Lachowski; Jarosław Lorenc; Jolanta Maślińska-Solich; Wincenty Turek

The aim of the work is to investigate the effect of drying raw polymeric catalysts in supercritical carbon dioxide to achieve catalysts of improved performance

Free and esterified sterols of Macoma balthica (L.)

Andrzej Jarzȩbski; Lucyna Polak; Gerhard Habermehl

Abstract 1. 1. The Baltic Sea bivalve mollusc Macoma balthica was investigated for the content and composition of free and esterified sterols. 2. 2. Sterols in M. balthica occurred mainly in the free form. 3. 3. Cholest-5,24-dien-3β-ol has been found only in the esterified form, and seems to be an indication of the processes of transformation of dietary sterols in M. balthica .

Sterol composition of marine bivalves from the genus Macoma

Andrzej Jarzȩbski; Roman Wenne

1. 1. Four members of the genus Macoma: M. Balthica, M. irus, M.;incongrua; and M. contabulata from the Japan Sea were investigated for their sterol composition. 2. 2. Cholest-5-en-3β-ol was the most abundant sterol in all investigated animals; the other major sterols were common constituents of bivalves. 3. 3. The observed similarity in sterol composition of the studied clams seems to be an indication of greater influence of ecological than genetic factors on sterol composition.

Seasonal changes in content and composition of sterols in the tissues of the bivalve Macoma balthica

Andrzej Jarzȩbski; Roman Wenne

Abstract 1. 1. Sterol content and composition of whole body, as well as hepatopancreas and gonads of the bivalve Macoma balthica L. were investigated during the annual reproductive cycle. 2. 2. The seasonal variations of sterol composition of M. balthica seem to be determined by the annual changes of the individual sterol levels in hepatopancreas. 3. 3. It is suggested that the dietary sterols are transformed by the M. balthica digestive gland according to the sterol requirements of the organism and then partially transferred to the developing gonads.

Sterol composition of Mesidothea entomon L. (Isopoda, Crustacea)

Andrzej Jarzȩbski; Leonard Falkowski; Józef Kuśmierz; J. Albaigés

Abstract 1. 1. The sterol composition of Mesidothea entomon (Isopoda, Crustacea) was investigated by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. 2. 2. As the major components of the sterol fraction from M. entomon the following compounds were identified: 24-norcholesta-5,22-dien-3β-ol, cholesta-5,22-dien-3β-ol, cholest-5-en-3β-ol, 5α-cholestan-3β-ol, 24-methylcholesta-5,22-dien-3β-ol, 24-methylcholesta-5,24(28)-dien-3β-ol and 24-methylcholest-5-en-3β-ol.

Structure of silica aerogels obtained from a single-step base catalyzed process boosted by fluorine anions

Andrzej Jarzȩbski; Lucjan Paja̧k

Abstract SAXS investigations of silica aerogels obtained from a single-step base catalyzed process boosted by fluorine anions show that their structure is polymer-chain-like rather than colloidal, as found in conventional basic aerogels. The size of the primary particles is about half of that observed in basic aerogels. Light aerogels exhibit clear mass fractal characteristics, covering the length scales from 40 to at least 400 A with D m equal to 1.8–1.9 for aerogels synthesized with water content W ≥ 4, or 2.2 for those obtained with W = 2. These mass fractal characteristics are not entirely consistent with volume fractal characteristics of the pore network resulting from the nitrogen adsorption-desorption method.
