Dialeurolonga re-defined (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae): with a new genus and species from India, two new genera from Australia, and discussion of host-correlated puparial variation

Anil Kumar Dubey; V. V. Ramamurthy

Aleuropositus Dubey gen. n., Australeurodes Dubey gen. n. and Septemaleurodes Dubey gen. n. are proposed with their respective type species as A. sinus Dubey sp. n. from India, D. operculobata Martin & Carver from Australia, and D. swainei Martin from Australia. A. sinus sp. n. is described from Kerala, India, illustrated with line drawings, microphotographs and SEM images. The puparia are asymmetric in taxonomic characters and shape, and variation in puparia associated with a single host is discussed. A generic diagnosis of Dialeurolonga is provided based on SEM study of the type species, D. elongata. Australian species placed in this genus have puparial characteristics that distinguish them from Afrotropical assemblages, and are here referred to two new genera.

Yuan Tung Shih; Andrew Polaszek; Anil Kumar Dubey; Shu-Pei Chen; Ping-Shih Yang; Chiun-Cheng Ko

Abstract A key to females of 11 Eretmocerus species occurring in Taiwan is provided. Two new species, E. tongxiaoensis Shih & Polaszek, sp. nov. and E. lannae Shih & Polaszek, sp. nov. found infesting Crenidorsum turpiniae (Takahashi) and Aleurothrixus floccosus (Maskell) respectively, are described. Five more Eretmocerus species are recorded here as new to Taiwan: E. bisetae Hayat, E. flavus Krishnan & David, E. queenslandensis Naumann & Schmidt, E. rui Zolnerowich & Rose and E. trialeurodis Hayat. New host records for four of these Eretmocerus species from five whitefly species are presented. The whitefly Aleurothrixus floccosus (Maskell) is recorded for the first time from Taiwan.

Description of a New Species of Aleuroclava Singh (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) from China

Ji-Rui Wang; Anil Kumar Dubey; Yu-Zhou Du

Abstract A new whitefly species, Aleuroclava tianmuensis Wang & Dubey (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is described from Daphniphyllum macropodum Miq. (Saxifragales: Daphniphyllaceae) and Litsea cubeba (Lours.) Pers. (Laurales: Lauraceae) from Tianmu Mountain (China). The puparium of this new species differs from that of the closely related species Aleuroclava gordoniae (Takahashi) by the presence of median tubercles on the abdominal segments, the position of the cephalic setae, and by the absence of a minute tubercle associated with the thoracic tracheal pores. An identification key of Aleuroclava species known from China is provided.

New genus and species of Aleyrodidae (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha) from North-Eastern India, with remarks on its relationships with allied genera

Anil Kumar Dubey

A new genus and species of whitefly, Arunaleyrodes geminus, are described from Sago forests of Arunachal Pradesh in North‐Eastern India. Habitus images, camera lucida drawings and scanning electron micrographs are provided to supplement the description and discussions. This new genus is distinguished from Aleurotuba in having long anterior and posterior marginal setae, apically rounded ensiform dorsal setae (except caudal setae), each marginal tooth with a wax‐secreting longitudinal groove along the axis of the tooth, and posteriorly elevated vasiform orifice. An apparently closely related genus, Aleurotuba, is diagnosed, discussed and illustrated here.

Description of a new genus and species of whitefly (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha) infesting Rhynchosia minima (Fabaceae) in Karnataka, India

Anil Kumar Dubey; Sudhir Singh

A new whitefly genus and species, Aleurocryptus rhynchosiae Dubey, are described from Donimalai mining area of Karnataka, India. Habitus, line art and scanning electron microscopic images of the puparium and other immature stages are provided. The puparia of the new genus and species are found to be pit‐forming on their host leaf, Rhynchosia minima (Fabaceae). The cone‐shaped, apically pointed dorsal setae with a smooth surface and fixed in prominent setal alveoli are newly reported from whitefly puparia.

Biology and morphology of life stages of three species of whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) from India

Mohammed Muzeruddin Baig; Anil Kumar Dubey; V. V. Ramamurthy

Abstract. The biology and morphology of life stages of the whiteflies Aleyrodes sp. on Oxalis corniculata Linnaeus (Oxalidaceae), Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius, 1889) on Solanum melongena Linnaeus (Solanaceae), and Dialeurodes delhiensis David & Sundararaj, 1992 on Ficus virens Ait. (Moraceae) were studied, the latter species known only from India and its biology studied for the first time. Duration from egg to adult emergence for males and females of the three species was 24.2 and 28.4, 18.6 and 21.8 and 97.5 and 100.6 days, respectively. Duration, with morphometrics and illustrations for each developmental stage are also provided. Males developed more quickly than and were outnumbered by females of the three species by a ratio of 3.5:1, 4:1 and 3:1, respectively. Nymphal developmental period was positively correlated with length and width and negatively correlated with length:width ratio. Considerable sexual variation was revealed by adult morphometrics.

Description of a grass feeding whitefly of the genus Tetraleurodes (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) from the Indo-Myanmar border

Anil Kumar Dubey; V. V. Ramamurthy

ABSTRACT A new species of whitefly, Tetraleurodes champaiensis Dubey sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) found infesting Sporobolus heterolepis (Poaceae) in Mizoram (India) is described along with measurements, line drawings and scanning electron microscope images. The species differs from Tetraleurodes thenmozhiae Jesudasan & David in being black in color and have bluntly pointed dorsal setae. The puparia of T. thenmozhiae are white and have capitate dorsal setae. The puparia of the new species were found feeding at the basal parts of central grass blades and almost near the ground level. An identification key to grass feeding Tetraleurodes species is provided. There was no ant attendance.

Acanthaleyrodes elevatus sp. n. (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) from India, with key to species and discussion of tuberculate setae

Anil Kumar Dubey; Sudhir Singh; Jon H. Martin

The genus Acanthaleyrodes Takahashi is reported for the first time from India. Acanthaleyrodes elevatus sp. n. is described from Bridelia retusa in Kerala, India, with a key to puparia of Acanthaleydes species. The new species differs in its exceptionally elevated eighth abdominal tergite, circular vasiform orifice and eight pairs of subdorsal setae. The generic characteristics of Acanthaleyrodes are redefined and distinguished from those of Tuberaleyrodes Takahashi. A. styraci Takahashi is re-described in detail with illustrations of puparia and immatures from Hong Kong. A lectotype puparium is designated for A. callicarpae Takahashi. The development of tuberculate setae is discussed, in whitefly puparia and earlier nymphal instars, and considered to be subject to environmental modification.
