Longitudinal effects of emotional labour on emotional exhaustion and dedication of teachers.

A great number of teachers find teaching fulfilling and are dedicated to it, but others feel emotionally exhausted, indicating that the interaction with pupils can be emotionally demanding. Emotional labor was shown to play an important role for the health of teachers. In a full two-wave longitudinal study over the period of 1 year, the effect of emotional labor on emotional exhaustion and dedication of 102 teachers was investigated. Teachers who were able to influence their emotions to feel the emotion appropriate in a situation (so called deep acting) felt significantly less emotionally exhausted after 1 year. From this result, deep acting can, thus, be characterized as health-beneficial. Once teachers felt emotionally exhausted, they used more surface acting. More dedicated teachers, on the contrary, did neither engage more in deep acting nor in surface acting at Time 2. This indicates that those teachers who are dedicated to teaching seem less likely to act. To prevent emotional exhaustion of teachers, the development of interventions to promote health-beneficial emotional labor is necessary. This can be achieved by fostering deep acting, which reduces emotional exhaustion over longer periods of time.

Emotionsregulation von Lehrkräften: Umgang mit Gefühlen als Teil der Arbeit

Der Lehrberuf gehort zu den personenbezogenen Dienstleistungsberufen, die sich durch haufigen direkten Kontakt mit anderen Menschen wahrend der Arbeit auszeichnen (Nerdinger, 1994). Die Interaktionen sind notwendig zur Aufgabenerledigung und gehen mit einer unmittelbaren Bereitstellung einer Dienstleistung einher. Wahrend die Nutznieser der Dienstleistung in anderen Branchen als Kunden, Klienten oder Patienten bezeichnet werden, sind solche Formulierungen im Schulbereich unangemessen. Dennoch gilt, dass Schuler und Eltern Nutznieser von Dienstleistungen sind, die von Lehrkraften erbracht werden. Dies betrifft sowohl den direkten Kontakt mit den Schulern im Unterricht als auch die auserunterrichtliche Schulerinteraktionen (z.B. wahrend der Pausenaufsicht oder bei Klassenfahrten) oder den Austausch mit den Eltern. In den letzten Jahren hat sich die Sichtweise verbreitet, dass bei solchen personenbezogenen Dienstleistungsberufen der Umgang mit den eigenen Gefuhlen, deren Beeinflussung („Regulation“) und auch die Beeinflussung der Gefuhle des Gegenubers (z.B. der Schuler) als besondere Arbeitsanforderungen zu betrachten sind. Haufig wird nicht von Emotionsregulation, sondern von Emotionsarbeit gesprochen, um zu betonen, dass die Emotionsregulation Teil der Aufgabenerledigung ist und die ausfuhrende Person dafur entlohnt wird.1

Age-Related Differences in the Emotion Regulation of Teachers in the Classroom

In a project on “Age-related differences in the emotion regulation of teachers facing demanding classroom situations” we investigated how teachers can be supported in regulating their emotions during demanding situations in their lessons so that they remain well, healthy and able to work until regular retirement age. Results of this project demonstrated that emotion regulation is indeed relevant to maintain emotional well-being and work ability of teachers. Thus, the ability to regulate their emotions successfully can be considered a resource of teachers which contributes to their health and well-being.
