Children’s weight and participation in organized sports

Aims: Literature dealing with the impact of organized sports on children’s weight has been marked by a lack of consensus. A major weakness characterizing most of this research is a lack of proper measurement methods. This paper seeks to fill an important knowledge gap through careful application of econometric methods. Methods: Estimations are carried out using data on 1,400 children attending 6th grade in 2008 in the municipality of Aalborg, Denmark. We use standard ordinary least squares (OLS) and class fixed effects to explore the effect of sports participation on body mass index (BMI) as well as underweight, overweight and obesity. Results: Results indicate that participation in organized sports reduced BMI by 2.1%. Likewise it reduced the likelihood of being overweight by 8.2 percentage points and obese by 3.1 percentage points. Conclusions: It is the unique dataset combined with econometric methods that distinguishes our contribution from that of others in the field, thereby offering new insight. Parental Socioeconomic Background and Child Behaviour

Although childhood obesity has long been in focus, little is known about the sensitivity of behavioural choices to measure parental resource constraints. The aim of this study is to examine the heterogeneous effects of children’s (or their parents’) choices of lifestyle subject to information and resource constraints, respectively. We address this issue using a unique longitudinal data set of almost 1,500 schoolchildren attending state schools between 2008 and 2010 in the Danish Municipality of Aalborg. One empirical strategy is to control for a rich set of child and parental characteristics; another is to use child fixed effect to control for fixed unobserved child characteristics. By including the interaction between child behaviour and parental socioeconomic background, a more complete but more complex picture arises. Our findings challenge the predominant assumption that behaviour and weight is a choice made by children, or their parents.

Estimating the Peer Effect on Youth Overweight and Inactivity Using an Intervention Study

BACKGROUND Understanding peer effect is potentially important for finding ways to combat the obesity epidemic. Nevertheless, it is not clear whether a peer effect exists because of the composition of the peer group, because the group members have similar, unobserved individual characteristics, or because of an endogenous effect. METHODS This issue is addressed here by using a unique longitudinal data set of 573 schoolchildren attending state schools in the Municipality of Aalborg, Denmark, during 2008-2010. To identify the spillover effect of a targeted intervention on peers, we use a difference-in-differences approach. RESULTS A targeted health intervention reduced body mass index (BMI) among overweight, inactive individuals and, more interestingly, that BMI among the nontreated peers was reduced by 1.04%. CONCLUSIONS The analysis suggests that individually targeted health intervention has a health benefit beyond the treated individual, which needs to be included when evaluating targeted policies aiming to combat childhood overweight and inactivity.

Does buffet choice architecture affect intake? The effect of relocating butter at a breakfast buffet on food intake

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate if a changed default reduces the intake of butter among students at a breakfast buffet. Students were divided into two groups and served themselves from a breakfast buffet. The control group was offered a buffet where the butter was easily accessible, whereas the intervention group was offered a buffet where a request had to be made for butter. Single packed portions of butter taken from each part of the buffet, the number of students, and the number of habitual users in each group were recorded. At the regular buffet, 67 of 115 students were habitual butter users and 81 packs of butter were taken. At the buffet with the changed default, 16 of the 56 students were habitual butter users. Seventeen packs of butter were taken from the buffet. Slightly displacing butter at a breakfast buffet and forcing students to ask for that option significantly reduced uptake.
