“May Her Breasts Satisfy You at All Times” (Prov 5:19)

Pointing to erotic passages in some of the wisdom books, a growing number of scholars argue that the Song of Songs is sapiential. As an alternative explanation for the similarities between the Song and Proverbs 1-9 and Sirach, this article argues that verses like Prov 5:19 might have originated as a critical reaction to the Song’s eroticism. Beyond explaining the erotic passages in Proverbs and Sirach, this thesis is significant in that it implies that the authors of Proverbs and Sirach still understood the Song “literally” rather than allegorically, as did later interpreters.

An Anti-Prophet among the Prophets? On the Relationship of Jonah to Prophecy

Despite the fact that the book of Jonah and its main character are atypical compared to other prophetic books and prophets, the book became one of the Twelve. Taking up insights from Ehud Ben Zvi and others, this article argues that these idiosyncrasies have to do with the self-understanding of the authors/tradents of the book and their ambivalent relationship to the classical prophetic past of ancient Israel. Identifying them as ‘literary prophets’, indebted to the prophetic tradition but at the same time aware of the differences from their classical predecessors, helps explain the ambivalences in the portrayal of Jonah, the interest in meta-prophetic questions, and peculiarities like the literary form of the book and the choice of Nineveh as the city that escaped destruction.

Abstract: Again and again, the Priestly text emphasizes bodily issues – in addition to the reference to male and female in Gen 1,27 and the emphasis on circumcision as the sign of the covenant in Gen 17, this is demonstrated most clearly in regulations for impurity, sin, sacrifices, and rituals and in the special requirements for priests. Zusammenfassung: Wiederholt legt der priesterschriftliche Text das Gewicht auf körperliche Aspekte – so neben dem Verweis auf »männlich und weiblich« in Gen 1,27 und der Hervorhebung der Beschneidung als Bundeszeichen in Gen 17 besonders deutlich in den speziellen Vorschriften für Priester sowie in den Aussagen zu Unreinheit, Sünde, Opfern und Ritualen. In diesem Aufsatz wird argumentiert, dass dieser Fokus auf Körperlichkeit ein Reflex auf ein Verständnis von Heiligkeit ist, das eine physische Dimension hat – auch dort, wo es um Gott geht.

Hilfe für Witwen und Waisen

The motif of help for widows and orphans is well attested throughout the ANE, but it is used quite differently in different writings. This contribution investigates these differences by first giving an overview of the ANE material and then asking how the different lines of tradition identified are continued in different parts of the OT (Wisdom and Psalms; Prophets; Deuteronomy). The investigation shows that the way help for widows and orphans is articulated reveals much about the theology/ideology of a particular writing. Le motif de l’assistance de la veuve et de l’orphelin est bien attesté dans tout le Proche-Orient antique, mais il est utilisé différemment selon ses traditions. Cette contribution analyse ces différents emplois, tout en donnant d’abord une vue générale de la documentation du Proche- Orient antique, puis en interrogeant comment les lignes de tradition ont persisté dans différents écrits de l’Ancien Testament (Sagesse et Psaumes, Prophètes, Deutéronome). L’analyse montre clairement que la façon dont est traité le motif de l’assistance de la veuve et de l’orphelin est révélateur de la théologie ou idéologie de chaque écrit. Das Motiv der Hilfe für Witwen und Waisen ist im gesamten AO gut bezeugt, wird im Einzelnen aber verschieden gebraucht. Dieser Beitrag geht diesen Unterschieden nach, wobei zuerst ein Überblick über den gesamt-altorientalischen Befund gegeben wird und daran anschließend danach gefragt wird, wie sich die verschiedenen Traditionslinien in verschiedenen Textbereichen des AT fortsetzen (Weisheit und Psalmen; Propheten; Deuteronomium). Die Untersuchung macht deutlich, dass die Art, wie über die Hilfe für Witwen und Waisen gesprochen ist, stets viel über die Theologie/Ideologie der entsprechenden Schriften besagt.
