Controlled auto-ignition

André Kulzer; Andreas Kufferath; Ansgar Christ; Jean-Pierre Hathout; Martin Knopf; Klaus Benninger

Gasoline HCCI, also called Controlled Auto-Ignition (CAI), allows for significant efficiency gains in combination with extremely low NOx emissions when compared to conventional spark-ignited combustion concepts. Bosch’s option to combine a lean-operating direct-injection engine with a simple exhaust gas aftertreatment system (three-way catalytic converter) adds to the attractiveness of CAI.
