The longitudinal approach to the study of immigrants has many undoubted advantages, to which Professor Appleyard and others have drawn attention (Appleyard, 1964, 1972). When observations are made and information obtained at each stage of the migratory experience, from the original decision to emigrate onward, the data obtained are more reliable than when the researcher must rely upon retrospection. Historiquement, le Canada est dualiste dans sa langue et son héritage culturel aussi bien que dans la structure de ses institutions. Toutefois, limmigration a donné lieu à un pluralisme culturel et à dautres phénomènes de différentiation sociale, de stratification et de redistribution écologique. Des termes comme ceux d“assimilation” et d“intégration” ne sont pas appropriés lorsquils sappliquent au nombre croissant dimmigrants “de passage” qui sont caractéristiques dune société post-industrielle. Lajustement social et économique des immigrants daprès-guerre au Canada est étudié à la lumière de ces considérations et des résultats de plusieurs enquêtes. Canada ha sido historicamente una dualidad tanto en su lengua y cultura como en su estructura institucional. A pesar de ello, la immigración ha dado lugar a un pluralismo cultural y a otros processos de diferenciación social, estratificación y redistribución ecológica. Se hace cada vez más difícil aplicar conceptos como “asimilación o integración” a vastos numeros de inmigrantes “mudables” en varios aspectos, geográficos y sociales a la vez y que caracterizan a la sociedad post-industriaul. Partiendo de estas consideraciones y apoyándose en datos empíricos, el autor revisa la adaptación económica y social de los inmigrantes de la post-guerra en Canada. Die Einwanderung hat jedoch kulturelle Vielfalt (cultural pluralism) geschaffen und andere Prozesse sozialer Differenzierung, Stratifizierung und kologischer Neu-Verteilung eingeleitet. Begriffe wie “Assimilierung” und “Integration” sind nicht zutreffend, wenn sie auf die wachsende Zahl zeitlich beschränkter (transilient) Einwanderer angewendet werden, die für eine nach-industrielle Gesellschaft charakteristisch sind. Die ökonomische und soziale Anspassung von Einwanderern, die nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg nach Kanada zogen, wird im Lichte dieser Ueberlegungen und auf Grund verschiedenen Quellenmaterials untersucht.
