Chronic copper poisoning in sheep from Northern Paraná, Brazil: case report

Selwyn Arlington Headley; Antônio Carlos Faria dos Reis; Tizianne Larissa Duim Ribeiro Nakagawa; Ana Paula Frederico Rodrigues Loureiro Bracarense

Chronic copper poisoning (CCP) in sheep is a severe disease that occurs worldwide. This paper describes the pathological lesions of CCP that occurred in a flock of sheep from Northern Parana, Southern Brazil. Seven, cross-breed Merino sheep, out of a flock of 14 were affected. Most of these animals demonstrated muscular tremors, nervous symptoms, difficult breathing, and died within 24-48 after the onset of clinical signs. Gross lesions were characterized by generalized icterus, hemoglobinuria, dark colored kidneys, and a softened spleen. Histological findings included tubular renal necrosis, centrilobular hepatic necrosis, and status spongiosis of the white matter of the brain; toxicological evaluation of the liver confirmed CCP.

The objective of this trial was to detect leptospires in fragments of kidney, liver and uterus of 96 cows with unknown sanitary status, randomly chosen at slaughter in Parana, Brazil. All 96 urine samples were submitted to direct examination using dark field microscopy. Positive samples in the direct examination and all kidney, liver and uterus fragments were cultured in EMJH modified medium and Tween 80/40/LH. Sections cut of kidney, liver and uterus were stained by Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) and indirect immunoperoxidase with hyperimmune serum against serovar Hardjo (Hardjoprajitno) and strain Londrina 14 (LO14), from serovar Canicola, which was isolated in the northern region of Parana state, Brazil, used as primary antibodies. Direct examination detected leptospires in the urine of four animals. All attempts to isolate leptospires from urine and kidney, liver and uterus fragments were negative after 16 weeks of incubation. In the HE stain, focal infiltrate of mononuclear inflammatory cells was observed in the renal interstitial area of most animals. In the indirect immunoperoxidase assay using hyperimmune serum against LO14 strain, the kidney of only one animal presented positive results. All fragments of kidney, liver and uterus tested with hyperimmune serum against serovar Hardjo were negative.

Aortic body tumors in dogs from Northern Paraná, Brazil

Selwyn Arlington Headley; Ana Paula Frederico Rodrigues Loureiro Bracarense; T.L.D.R. Nakagawa; Kleber Moreno; Patrícia Mendes Pereira; Antônio Carlos Faria dos Reis

This article describes the occurrence of aortic body tumors in four dogs from Southern Brazil. All dogs were males, more than 9 year of age; most of these were from the Boxer breed of dogs. The animals had large neoplastic growths at the base of the heart, which demonstrated histologic characteristics consistent with that of aortic body tumor. By immunohistochemistry, tissue sections from all dogs reacted positively to neuron specific enolase. These cases might represent the first description of this tumor in dogs from Brazil, as confirmed by immunohistochemistry.

Stephanofilariasis is a worldwide disease caused by the nematode Stephanofilaria that determines skin lesions. In cattle, the chronic dermatitis is characteristic begining with papules that progress to nodules, alopecia and ulcers with crusts. Despite its long time recognition, there are few studies and reports about this disease, specially in Brazil. This work was conducted in order to investigate epidemiological and clinical features of stephanofilariasis in dairy cows and to compare two methods for the diagnosis confirmation. Fifty-eight naturally affected dairy cows from seven herds located in Santana do Itarare, state of Parana, and Itabera, state of Sao Paulo, were studied from January 2006 through August 2008. Two methods for the diagnosis confirmation were compared using biopsied tissues from the border of the skin lesion: the histopathological examination (n=24) and the direct sediment examination of an isotonic saline solution in which the tissue fragment remained soaked (n=20). The prevalence was higher from December to March (57%) and lactating cows were primarily affected (87,9%). The cranial aspect of the fore mammary glands was the main site of the skin lesions (96,7%), chiefly near the ventral midline (55%). The characteristic wound was of circular shape, ulcerated with crusts and serosanguineous exudation. Chronic dermatitis with eosinophilic and mononuclaer cell infiltrates was the histopathologic change pattern present. The parasite was not detected in any histologic section examined. The direct sediment examination otherwise proved to be efficient for the diagnosis confirmation revealing the nematode adult and larval forms in all the specimens.

Achados histológicos em fetos bovinos abortados e não abortados

Werner Okano; Ana Bracarense; Antônio Carlos Faria dos Reis; Amauri Alcindo Alfieri

Tissue fragments from 17 non-aborted and 93 aborted fetuses were histologically studied. No histological lesions were observed in non-aborted fetuses, and 51.6% of the aborted fetuses presented histological lesions. The main lesions were: focal gliosis and mononuclear infiltrate in liver, CNS, lungs and muscular tissues.
